That kind of bullshit is exactly what turns me off about Apple. That and the smug religiosity of some Apple owners of course...
The reality is that Apple has a huge head start and it shows. Currently the SDK is not even available from Palm and from the FAQ looks to be Javascript based. That would severly limit the functionality and speed in comparison to the current iPhone (more like rev 1.0) Further to even get it you need to be approved and they state there will be a limit. It will be interesting to see if Palm can catch up at a good pace. Previously they had some great development tools but that was really from Motorola (aka Freescale) that purchased CodeWarrior.

The rest looks to be as restrictive as Apple or worse. + smug

I dislike the Red Sox. Come playoff time, it's even worse. But it doesn't make them a bad team, just as the hatred for Apple doesn't mean their products are no good.

Well put. And the hate spewed (by both sides) simply doesn't jive well either.

I was a PC leg-humper for years. And there was even a time when I was your poster boy for hating anything Apple, especially Macs. My tune has changed - significantly.

While I don't live in a basement and rock the birkenstocks, I do love my Mac. However, I'm not a fanboy trolling the interwebz looking to preach about Apple greatness. Nor do I follow Steve Jobs like the next messiah. I approached Apple products with a relatively open mind and was able to look past this apparent smugness that has turned a lot of MCADX'ers off...

Its a great product that works exceptionally well.
Today's public figures can no longer write their own speeches or books, and there is some evidence that they can't read them either.

They don't have the right to advertise their product? Apple is justified in 'kicking their ass?' Ever heard of 'restraint of trade?'

Oh, I suppose they have a RIGHT, just as my hypothetical asshole would have the right to give me the bird. I view this as karma at work.

The guy that handles our business account and who has earned my loyalty is not an exclusive Sprint provider, so he's still waiting. He has me on a few wait lists with exclusive providers with whom he does business, and at one point suggested that I go to Wal Mart and pick one up rather than wait for him. I told him that I wouldn't go to Wal Mart if they were selling $4.00 bl jobs.

So, I'll wait a few days or weeks or whatever.

Im still digging it. The app center is slowly growing, and rumor has it that the next over the air update is due out in a couple of weeks, hopefully with the on screen keyboard, and some of the minor bugs fixed. I have had zero freeze-ups which is better than I can say out of my last two phones.

That said, I have been debating if Im going to keep it. As with all Sprint phones you get a 30 day return period for any reason. The only reason that I would return it is that I paid full price for it. With charger and case, close to $700. My HTC Touch Pro is the biggest hunk of garbage that I have held to my ear in quite some time, and even after getting a replacement phone, it continues to have a mind of its own. I was told by the rep that sold me the phone, that due to it being a new phone, he could not discount the phone, but that customer service could help me and that they would probably give me upgrade price on it. After speaking with them, they arent going to be able to help me at all, and on top of that, I cant in good faith sell my Touch Pro to someone with all the bugs it has, and because it isnt on my account anymore, I cant get it serviced or replaced. So I think I may return my Pre begrudgingly and either a) try to score a BB curve on ebay to use for a while, or b) keep having my Touch Pro replaced and repaired until I am eligible for the upgrade in November.

So in closing.... The Pre is sweet as hell and has done everything I need, but due to circumstances beyond it's control, (more the rep being mistaken about what Sprint could do) it will probably go back temporairly.

Such a play on words...they are always on the side by the propane tanks. So technically you wouldn't have to go in Walmart...

Finally got a Pre today to replace the much despised HTC (appropriately, the acronym for Hate This Cer.)

I like it - The biggest challenge with it will be dealing with Sprint... for instance, I was led to understand the phone would operate as a cellular modem, but Sprint's not supporting that capability at this time, so I'll have to get a separate air card in the interim so I can do some work remotely from Grattan.

The keyboard is small as has been reported, but using fingernail edges I'm not getting many errors in input - I could never use the HTC Win 6.xx to post to this forum, but the Palm OS is easily compatible with Vb. Bluetooth synched up with the car stereo with none of Windows' drama or fiddly BS. And the Pre is compatible with Pandora, which will stream in stereo via BT - that beats XM in my estimation.
It does some other stuff - you can watch TV and games are coming, but I won't use it for that anyway.

It won't sync to Outlook unless one has an exchange server, and it loses some functionality, so it seems the best gig is to have all my contacts and calendars in Google. The good news is that I can synch changes wirelessly, so I won't have to remember to get each computer updated.

I need to see if it will run Citrix 'go to my PC', since the screen is so much better and easier to zoom than the one on the old phone. That would potentially ease some of the issues with the lack of cellular modem support.

So far I think it's a nice piece of technology.

I was able to sync all my contacts with Outlook. Here is the link to do a one time transfer of your contacts from Outlook. Palm - Start here: Move your info to your webOS™ phone

Also, go to the update icon and make sure you are running the latest software. There was an update on release day and another on Monday I believe.

A Couple of tips that I picked up during my short taste of Pre-dom.
    1) In the screen setting, turn your brightness down to about 15-20% of max. This will help out quite a bit with battery life.
    2) When you open the keyboard and start typing, the smart search goes to work. If you want to call say Grattan raceway and you have the number saved in your phone, when you type in gra for instance it will pop up your saved contact, or you can search google or wiki for grattan by finishing it out.
    3) While as of yet, you can not remove the icon for programs that came on the phone, you can move them to any of the three pages of you launcher. So if you never use the Nascrap program, hold it down until it highlights and move it to the right of the screen. It will move it to the next page. I ended up putting stuff I never use on the third page, stuff I dont use much on the second, and daily apps on the first.

Dont get discouraged when you find a shortfall, ie no soft (on screen) keyboard, or cant change the sound for texts and emails. With OTA updates and the third party app ability, it should be rockin very shortly. I cant wait until November when I can get another one at the upgrade price. I think the Pre is the best phone I have had since probably the Moto Star Tac, which was the last phone I can remember which seemed to always work, I just couldnt make myself pay full price (~$650 with the touch stone) for it. So Im ordering a BB off Ebay and going to use that until Nov rolls around and I get another.

    Enjoy it Dave!

I misspoke - I was able to get the (about 1000) contacts sync'ed from outlook very quickly, but the calendar is another issue -

Nevertheless, I should be able to get my outlook calendar copied into Google today and then it will automatically sync up with the phone.

If you want to keep both calendars (Google and Outlook) anyway, install SyncMyCal on your computer. Two-way syncs, can maintain categories and multiple calendars.

For those times when you can't/don't feel like logging in to Google Calendar or inputting info from your phone. Plus I like having a backup calendar for those unforeseen hiccups.
