Looking for suggestions for a PC build or barebone system to pick up. I'd like to keep the footprint to a minimum. I'd prefer AMD. The function will be a gateway to my NAS (which doesn't transfer large files well) via USB. Connected to my xbox and something I can leave on to RDP into. It will be on a shelf in my basement (small shelf why I need a small footprint). No need for an optical drive.
Why not a laptop. I use windows media player with updated codecs. I can watch videos, listen to music via wifi.
So are you just using it for storage? What about WDMy Book: My Book World Edition II 2 TB Hard Drives ( WDG2NC20000 )
I've had good luck with the Shuttle XPC line of computers. Add a processor, memory and OS and it's pretty cheap. This month's PC Magazine has an article on a $250 Shuttle running Linux.
Two of the ones I built with AMD processors have been solid for over 3 years.

You want to build me one?
...dude you ride an offroad bike with slicks, 1/2 the weight of a GS, double the suspension, with a browning 50 cal going off 32" from your skull as a daily freaking driver - I'd expect anything except a nitro dragbike to be bland by comparison - SSG

I'm considering that as an option and just leaving it on and connected in the basement.

I'd be interested in seeing the specs. I think I am due to visit the store to grab that magazine.

Your nas sucks though, or you wouldn't be asking us for a PC to put in front of it so you can actually USE it right? Ok just checking
So spend 400$ on a netbook or whatever, have a bunch of crap plugged in and all networked together....or drop 350$ and have a useable nas (raided) so you can throw yours in the trash, whee!
Your end goals may be different and I'm just being obstinate...but I was in the same predicament awhile ago and after building a tower pc w/esata raid, dinking around with a laptop managed pseudo nas, and other joy....I said F that and bought the above. Problem solved, its now a thoughtless process, I come home and my camera drops my pictures there from my mac, pc, or ubuntu machine, and it shows up on my xboxes, other laptops, etc. It's nice, manages its own ups, power on/off schedule, backups (rsync or usb) and there is even a nice monitoring widget that it comes with that is pretty handy.

The Seamii are awesome.
The more I read about that NAS the more I rethink my project.
Thanks alot. There were other reasons for the build not directly related to this project.
Now I may have 2 projects.
I wasn't trying to be a jerk in my post, just trying to save you some time. I won't tell you how many hours I've wasted on my setup only to end up with a 'bought and paid for turnkey solution' after all was said and done. I really liked the Raid X technology they use, once 2tb drives become obtanium...I will seamlessly upgrade to some 1tb's on the cheap.
I also ended up installing GigE and 802.11n as a result of this project above, because I found my PC's/Laptops were causing some bottlenecks on wireless.
Next phase for me is automating an Amazon S3 push I still have a second project occuring, but since I took care of about 83% of my needs for now, I'm ok.

Another reason for doing the build was that I've had quite a few people ask me to build them systems and they want them like cheap cheap cheap. Don't want to build something and send it out without seeing how it can perform.
Most are just for web use, same idea as a netbook just as a desktop.

The first time I saw that sign it was outside Dom's garage on The Fast and The Furious. I've always remembered it.

also see if everything you're connecting will support GbE and jumbo frames. This will increase the performance of file transfer and streaming by a factor of 3 minimum.

RN was my chief engineers toy this weekend. He spent an hour in my office blathering on and on about how nice it was and how it was linux 2.6 and how he got jumbo frames configured with his switch and NIC and iSCSI working on it and how it had a web server and on and on. I thought he would never leave

I even have the Debian/Ubuntu herd at my office asking me about mine now
