Yeah.........so?
Best gas buster for the money?
Just started looking, and have only tested the Honda CR-V, Civic (not the hybrid), Toyota Rav4 w/6cyl., Pruis.
Naturally, the Prius wins in the gas mileage department, but I really don't want anything that small again. My fave so far, hands down, is the CR-V. I really didn't expect to like it as much as I did.
What other vehicles should I throw into the mix?

On a more serious note, a WRX gets mid 20's and is probably on par with those SUV's you listed. AWD and a hoot to drive.

Mo,
I would vote for the Civic. The new body style is tops in my book.

Yeah, I really like the new bodystyle as well.
Heavy, you have one of the new ones, right?

Re: Best gas buster for the money?
Hey Mo. On my last tank of gas I got 38 mpg from my Civic. Half of it was all freeway. Half was my normal commute where I don't break 40 mph over the 10 miles.
It's not my Avalanche, but it's damn practical. And pretty nice to boot. It's also pretty fast. I mean, for an economical car it's got good power. BTW I have a 5-speed manual which I'm sure helps.
EDIT: Typically I get 32-34 mpg

Yeah, I'm thinking of giving it another look. I think the main reason I dug the CR-V more was for those snowy days and for the fact that I can get leather w/heated front seats. Something the Civic doesn't offer.

Nothing too small.

Re: Best gas buster for the money?
Well, no Mini then.
Most of those "cute ute" SUVs (other than the hybrid versions) don't get any better gas mileage than the average mid and large sedans, so I'm not sure why you're looking there.
I'd pick the RAV4 over the CR-V, FWIW.

The Aygo got the same safety rating (four stars) in the Euro NCAP tests as the Honda CR-V. Size does not necessarily mean safety, the European said...

I'm looking at the cute utes more for their snow go abilities. I prefer AWD.
And I thought I'd prefer the RAV4 over the Cr-V, as well. Until I drove both of them back to back yesterday.
The RAV w/6cyl. was definitely quick. Not quite on par with my Charger, but much closer than I expected. And the exterior is sharper looking than the CR-V. But, the CR-V hands the RAV4 its ass in every other aspect. And the seats in the Toyota are an absolute crime against humanity.
I may end up going hybrid, though.

If you buy a Prius, it will not be welcome in my driveway and you will NEVER hear the end of it from me.

I want the sedan Civic Si. 197hp and gets some nice upgrades. Website says it still gets 23c/32h mpg. Not bad for a little rocket.

That's fine. I'll park it on the sidewalk out front overlooking the algae hole.

Yeah, I like the sedan version also. But I've gotten really lazy these days and don't want to go back to a manual trans.

I have a coworker with a rather heavy foot behind the wheel of his Stage 2 WRX and he gets 23-25mpg avg regularly. There isn't a day that car doesn't see 80-100mph. I also have another buddy with a not so heavy foot and he averages about 25mpg as well.

Yeah, my friends with a WRX wagon get mid 20's commuting in it.

When I got my 2003, it had an auto. It was nice but I felt like a turtle without a manual. Besides, manuals get better gas milage.
I am quite older since the last time I owned a civic with a manual. Maybe that feeling of being a turtle is better than shifting? Don't know. I just love the new styling.
