    We had the P-38 too, but I'd guess you're right on the Brit thing.

    I am partial to the bird of prey names.

    Raptor, Falcon, Eagle...those are just cool names for a fighter jet.

    No, it's a Lockheed Martin thing... it seems like they have been trying to call every damn freaking thing they make the Lightning. The DoD finally capitulated on this one.

    The F-22 was almost called the "Lightning", for example.

    All things considered, I think the Raptor will just be too costly for the Air Force to use at this time. Not only is the plane extremely expensive. But It is also extremely expensive to maintain. Both costs have not come down since production started. Re-occurring cost of maintenance is murder trying to keep a stealth jet, ......well stealthy.

    Look at the B-2 stealth bomber. At a cost of over 1 billion per plane, I think the gov only bought 20. And that number was down from the original plan. Northrop's original estimate was not costing that much. Of course they were not the best planners of the program either. Cost overruns were significant. But I think that is to be expected. Technology comes at a high price.

    Lockheed had the same issues with the Raptor - cost overruns. And now with the JSF. A big difference with JSF is maintenance. It is supposed to be cheaper. At least that is the plan. I hope it works out that way.
