Phil Hill, American F1 World Champion R.I.P.

A friend of mine who is close to the family just informed me that Phil died this morning.

Godspeed to a racing genius and a very good man.

His impact on racing was far reaching and he was a true American racing legend. To date, the only American-born driver to win the F1 Championship.

Farewell to one of the gentlemen of the racing world

SI just put up an article.

Phil Hill, only US-born F1 champ, dies - Racing - SI.com

The Times has a better one:

Quote:
“A little later he came over and sat down,” Mr. Daley wrote. “He began to talk. ‘There are more don’ts than dos in the business,’ he said. ‘Trips violated a don’t by trying to occupy a space already partially occupied by Clark’s Lotus. It’s horrible in a way. But in another way it’s not so horrible. After all, everybody dies. Isn’t it a fine thing that von Trips died doing something he loved, without any suffering, without any warning? I think Trips would rather be dead than not race, don’t you?’

Dennis, the guy we had a beer with in Long Beach has spent a couple hours with him every Monday for the last couple of years, getting his narrative down for the book that will come out next year of all Phil's photographs from that era.

He is devastated.

sYeah, I remember the discussions, he must be upset.

Based on you guy's stories, and what I've read in the press, it doesn't sound like you could be around him much and not enjoy his company.

Let us know when it comes out, I'd love to buy a copy.

So sad to see this confirmed. One of my heroes from my childhood, I remember him driving those shark GP Ferraris and then at Le Mans.

I was at a vintage car race this weekend and they had a parade lap of every vehicle in the paddock in his honor, I took Video and will link it when I'm done.
