Hurricane Gustav vs New Orleans

Louisiana eyes Gustav, activates Guard troops - Yahoo! News

Looks like Nagin is actually trying to get something done this time. For the sake of the people I hope the storm doesn't do any damage. I guess we'll find out how many improvements they really made over the last 2 years and change.

I hope those Louisianans catch a break this time.

In the meantime, I'll be waiting for that 'Focus on the Family' guy who put out a video asking people to pray for rain in Denver to put out a more serious one
praying that it won't in NO.

Maybe that's not as important to him?

It is way too early to tell what the storm is going to do yet. I think they should have waited atleast another 24 hrs to see what this thing will do. Currently the storm is at wind speeds of 45mph and has been decreasing. It may pull up strength in the warm waters, but NO still has plenty of time to react.

Not only that but the pressure is currently at 999mb. It's not going to be able to strengthen anytime soon.

Though, this native Floridian gets a kick out of watching how people now react to Tropical Storms, in general.

The loons at the Weather Channel and their fellow global warming accolytes are desperate for something to happen since it's been almost dead quiet since they made all of their dire predictions after Katrina.

Even here in mid-Missouri I noted an explosion in Hurricane experts after Katrina. Of course, many of them weren't even aware there was a Hurricane out there in 2004 as Charley flattened my old hometown, and mowed down a pretty significant swath of Florida including Orlando which is about as far inland as you're going to get in that state.

Watching two hour satellite loops of tropical storm Gustav is far more exciting.

I'm pretty sure he was referring to Nagin and company being good little Democrats and being extremely helpful to further their overall cause.

Don't think I'm insensitive or non compasionate but I'm glad it's not coming here. We are still flooded from Fay and I've spent the last 2 days filling sand bags watching my co-workers home slowly become a fortress surrounded by sandbags. We're all pretty happy Gustav's going somewhere else. The St. Johns river is still rising and continues to flood along the way. We still might get hit with the next one, or the next one, or the next one........

Bring on the skeeters.

Have they ramped up mosquito control in your area? All that still and stagnant water will make the average summertime invasion look like childs play.

Key West long range radar action:

NWS radar image loop of Long Range Reflectivity from Key West, FL

Check the satellite views for Gustav and Hanna views.

edit: this is the site I use for weather. Most accurate you'll find. Click the auto update to on and it'll keep the radar view you've selected updated with 10-15 minute increments. Handy for storm tracking and flight info too.

edit2: just clicked the rainfall total. It's dumping over an 1" an hour. That's not bad, but it ain't good either

We've got regular skeeter control but yes, they've stepped it up closer to the flood areas thanks to the requests of the emergency workers in the area.

Seamus, how is Alabama likely to fare up by you and Rob?

It would almost be better if we did take the brunt of it. Fewer people would die due to madness and/or incompetence.

If Alabama takes a direct hit (big if here) they would only get some left over winds and some pretty good rain out of it. Nothing bad that far north. My Dad is in Baton Rouge and is staying where he is. And he is only 60 miles from the coast line. Hurricanes die out pretty quickly when over land and not being fueled by the warm waters of the ocean and gulf.

Right now, it just looks like we'll be getting a little wet on the outskirts of whatever the storm kicks up. Nothing out of the ordinary for summer rain storms here.

I have family from New Orleans and Mandeville coming up today. A buddy of mine near Mobile says they're staying put as it looks like they'll just get some of the outskirts of the storm.

LA is getting the very outskirts of the storms now. I've been keeping a couple of loops open with Autoupdate turned on.

Rainfall totals: NWS radar image loop of One Hour Precipitation from New Orleans/Baton Rouge, LA

Radar image: NWS radar image loop of Long Range Reflectivity from New Orleans/Baton Rouge, LA

Composite radar image loop: NWS Enhanced Radar Mosaic: Southern Mississippi Valley Sector Loop

This is NOAA's Gustav tracking site:
Hurricane Gustav Tracking: Atlantic Hurricane Gustav

As a willing participant of the madness, Florida does a pretty good job of managing emergencies. We've learned a ton from Andrew back in '92 and it showed back in '04 as far as emergency response. From the victims I've personally dealt with, the public is reasonably happy with the response from public safety in this area.

Thoughts and prayers to your family - we've had no luck reaching my wife's mother, siblings, etc. in the Port Arthur, TX area and hope that they've left in plenty of time.

IMO they should be fine, being on the west side is not that bad. Now if you are on the east side you get the moisture brought from the gulf and spin off tornadoes. But almost nothing on the west side.

I keep hearing media sensationalists talk about it taking the exact same path as Katrina
Yes, if you mean warm gulf waters and an La. in it's sights, they are right, but we don't exactly know where it will end up yet...hopefully it continues to lose strength. Regardless, here is a map showing the Katrina path and Gustav path (predicted) thus far.

Hurricane Gustav (2008), Hurricane Katrina (2005) - Atlantic Ocean - Hurricane Path Tracking & Storm Status Information

Ok science crap out of the way, my thoughts and prayers go to anyone in that area, 120mph winds and unknown storm surge still look ugly to me.
