BMW M3 concept revealed

Geneva Premiere: BMW M3 Concept - Jalopnik

I'm still not at peace with it. The M cars have always been my favorite, but this new one rubs me the wrong way still...

It looks constipated. I just don't like the latest round of angular/round conflicted BMWs.

They've finally fixed the tail lights on the new 3 series cars. The nose still looks like dookie

I prefer the older M5s where it was all about stealth. I like stealth cars.

I like the IS-F concept. Lexus actually has a shot at de-throning the M3 with it.

But it's a 4 door with a not so roomy back seat and no manual transmission available. I think that's being overly optimistic. Lexus makes good cars, but I don't think they can beat the M's performance yet.

Re: BMW M3 concept revealed

Hey Z, that reminds me.

The whole time I was in Germany, I was driving my friend's 06 M3 convertible.

I'm with you on this next model. The pic doesn't show you the hideous ass end of the new 3 series. Doesn't have the brute look of the older models, too rounded and refined.

Almost looks like a man designed the front end and a woman designed the rear.

You're right, no manual but an eight speed paddle-shifted SMG. I'm pretty sure the new M3 is getting a 7 speed SMG rather than a standard manual as well.
And the back seat to me is a plus. Better insurance rates than a coupe and easier in/egress for the kids.
If the performance of the Lexus V8, with reportedly similar horsepower but more torque, is even close to that of the M3, I'd put my money on the IS-F. It is much better looking and the fact that Lexus builds a reliable car give it two big plusses.

That said, it has a BIG hill to climb to prove a worthy competitor.
But I'll be watching.

+1 on the IS-F. Love that car... they even nailed the styling. That's what an M3 should look like. If I were to buy an M3 I'd want the sedan anyway.

(the new M3) Looks like the M6. I pulled up beside one downtown the other night. Same carbon roof. Kinda sexy but not my style.

I haven't read up on it much. Is it a true SMG or is it an automatic with paddle shifters? I have yet to drive a true SMG car so I don't have anything to say about them other than I'm skeptical of the fun factor.

Well, from all the reports it is a true SMG and is supposed to work very much like the Ferrari system, not just the lame auto with paddles like the RX-8 has.
However, right now it is all manufacturer data and speculation.
If (alright, when) it come out we'll know the real details. I just like that someone is stepping up to the plate and trying to make a real M3-fighter instead of just pretending.

It all looks soft to me, and looks too much like BMW hired the Pontiac Grand Am designer for their new line. Lost it's distinctiveness and went soft all over. The older BMW's are still on my want to have list, but not the new ones

There are much better bang for the buck speed machines out there. EVO and Sti come to mind. They don't have the luxury of a Bimmer but you can add that stuff yourself and save $$$$$$. And you can remove the wing on either car.

I think the hood is one of the most hideous things I've ever seen slapped on a car.

I love my Charger. I'd probably like an Evo as well. The only thing is that I've grown quite fond of all the interior room that I have now. So, I give away a little speed and a boatload of handling for roominess and comfort. It's a fair trade-off, in my book.
