Verizon Q or Cingular Q9 (and result)
Weird stupid dilemma here...I have a company cell phone, and it's with any provider I want.
Presently I have Verizon for personal use and Cingular for my 'work phone'. I just put my Cingular through an hour and a half wash cycle - it's not so happy, so I need a new device like tomorrow.
We (my team) was recently given the instruction to all get data devices in our next phone cycle.
Presently the only approved data device is the Motorola Q however, which is only out for Sprint and Verizon. I love my Verizon service, but the Q they have is sort of long in the tooth, and Cingular is about to get a new Q (2-3 months) that should be kickass, with 3G and a host of other interesting stuff...hmm. Granted I was told the new black Q is a newer version of software and stuff.
The primary interest I have in Cingular for work is the fact that I can pull the SIM and put it in any phone that I want. So if I want to take my 'work phone' on the road but not have a big bulky data device with me while flying, it's a small effort to do so and I can always pop the sim back into the toast phone/pda/etc. when I get there (we used to have Cingular 8125's till they POS'd out on us). The better part of Verizon is that the shit works in every nook and cranny of the planet, but do I really want that for a work phone .
Knowing this, help me with the poll options attached

Re: Verizon Q or Cingular Q9
I have updated the firmware twice on my Q, so it isn't quite as "long in the tooth" as it was . . .

Heh...being oncall and not having a company paid for cellphone means the choice was pretty much made for me. Hopefully the Black Q should be here Tuesday...my company seems to have a little pull with Verizon for some reason I guess thats why it gets here so fast
Ab - glad to hear you are liking your Q. Does it have the ability to save attachments and view them now finally?

Re: Verizon Q or Cingular Q9
p.s. I couldn't rightfully point my friends in the direction of this device and then not get one myself, it just wasn't logical...I'll admit that had a little bit of bearing on things. Not to mention we can all call each other for free now!!

You can view but not edit. I've looked at a pdf on mine. While not ideal, it looked surprisingly nice.

Interesting...so if I save it to the SD or something can I edit it once on the filesystem?
..that is the only thing I haven't done on them yet. I should have really just gotten one a few months ago and quit whining.

Probably what you need to do is save it off on the SD and edit it on another machine. Once on the SD (the new version) then send it as an attachment from the SD.

Mine always did. I never beefed the ram, so I just delete them once I get a chance to look at them.
Honestly though, I really only need the:
. . . Just walked into the DC after my pager went off and smelled something like burning transformers. Do you think I should take a look around and see if anything looks weird? . . .
Anything beyond that I usually just wait till I can get to a workstation to read it .

Re: Verizon Q or Cingular Q9
The "Norman" GSM Q that is coming out does appear to be pretty trick but, in the end this guy won out - not because I am impatient either. So for those that care, here is why:
-1- The Vz model is already past it's "service pack 1" stage. It's got maint updates and the new hardware version is tried/true and very solid (and black rubber like my heart .). Motorola makes some kickass hardware in the first place and I'm sure the Norman/Q9 will rock out of the gate, but rev 2.0 is always better then rev 1 unless you're talking about Fast and the Furious or Cocoon.
-2- EvDo vs. 3G - Yep, Cingular finally will have some throughput, only what 1.5 years behind a full EvDo deployment - maybe more? I realize GSM may be the best (and well, only) global standard and all but it's still too new in the US to have trouble-free operations coast to coast and thus leaves (left me) with a fluctuating network that just never gave me the feeling of anytime/anywhere with it's service. I felt the data would end up the same way, and there is something to be said for the old CDMA tech in terms of reliability (again I guess this could be labelled as Verizon here, but..whatever).
-3- Lifespan - the average phone for me lasts <1 year, not because I kill them - I actually take really good care of them. But I tend to get something and within 15 minutes of having it on my hip I can pretty much tell it's flaws. Take for example the 8125 I had earlier this year I loved it!..for awhile. I could never get into a good situation with a case for it because it had to slide open. The sliding also brought about some 'slack' in the sliding mechanism, and much in honor of my old nextels I guess - it would feel the need to just go out of service at times and never come back ..I thought it was a windows thing but it must have just been Pocket PC, because the WM5.0 smartphone rocks my biscuit. It's also been more then 15minutes of this thing clipped to my hip and I haven't been pissed at it yet...thats a good sign.
