Canon telephoto lenses
So, I'm still looking at telephoto lenses. I was pretty set on getting the 100-400 IS L series lens. Then still considering the 70-200 2.8 L IS lens. Now I am considering the 300mm f4 IS L prime lens. I already have a 1.4x teleconverter so that would give me a 300 and a 420 lens in one. I mostly want to be able to shoot at motorsports events from a fixed position and also shoot nature/wildlife. The IS would be nice as I will handhold mostly.
I don't think I really need a lens in the 100 range as I already have a 105 2.8 macro lens that covers that length well. I would be missing around 200 but for the most part, I will be far enough away, the longer the lens the better. I don't think 200mm is a length I would use often. If I do, I still have a 75-300 crappy starter lens that I have been using for my tele shots.
Looking at the photos I shot at the last even at VIR, I shot at 300mm and ended up cropping down to get what I wanted so I think the 300mm lens with the 1.4x on it giving me a 420mm lens with an f 5.6 isn't a bad option. Plus it is hundreds less than the zoom lenses...
Make sense? Any suggestions?

from a nikon guy - for us, teleconverters make the image softer, and tricks autofocus sometimes.
And coming from an amateur - I'd rather have the option to zoom in/out given that it allows me to try different framing. Obviously, picture quality a prime lens will be better....
I'd go zoom zoom.

The tele will definately impact the image making it softer and from what I've read will slow down the focus a little bit. But... I should be pretty much aiming at the same spot so if I keep it prefocused it shouldn't be an issue.
Another option is also to get the 2x tele which will make this a manual focus lens but would give me a 600mm lens. Definately not a superior image, but a lot cheaper than any other longer and faster prime lens.

Help me out here. As I read this, I can't tell if you're trying to be a brand snob or just making a comment,ie: "us Nikon people.."
TC's soften ALL images regardless of make and model and will sometimes confuse the AF on all cameras.

Not the greatest idea in the world as you more than likely won't end up with a good percentage of keepers using this method.
You have a 30D, right? More than good enough on AF to keep up with what you want it to do. Just get used to switching the AF points around and you'll start doing it without even thinking about what you're doing.

Yeah, a 30D. By prefocus, I just mean have it in the neighborhood of the distance so it doesn't have as much focusing to do... I think the lens has limiters on it as well which should help.

Oh gotchya. Practice your panning while using the constant AF.

I have absolutely nothing intelligent to add to this post.
Which make this post no different from any others on the board.

yep, I definately need to...
The 300mm 4.0 also has the two mode IS, one that is vertical only so you can use it while panning.

I do have one piece of information for you telephoto geeks. DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT clean your lens with your T-Shirt in front of NHFireFighter, he goes into some kind of evil rage like you done something wrong or something.

That is why I keep a UV filter on it. SO I can clean it with a t-shirt an just replace the filter when it gets destroyed
