Biodiesel

Biodiesel Powers Up on Financing - WSJ.com

If biodiesel were available at every gas station, would that be enough to make you buy a diesel vehicle? What if the price per gallon were comprable w/ regular diesel? What if it were more?

Re: Biodiesel

There is a guy on Rogue that is making his own for $.75 a gallon to fuel his truck.

I have a very close friend who has invested heavily in biodiesel production. He'll be a millionaire soon as well. It has great potential.

Re: Biodiesel

it might be cheaper, but in the long run it cost more. it makes less hp and worse fuel mileage. heck, the newer diesel that is out now makes less power and worse mileage

Re: Biodiesel

Biodiesel is cool as it converts waste into fuel...the kind of thing that gladdens my heart.

I wouldn't pay more for it at all. IT should cost less.

I've run biodiesel in my truck, didn't notice much difference, except the exhaust did smell a bit different.

It was soy based I think...

Re: Biodiesel

I think it is bad, they say people in America are fat now just think what it will be like when all the highways smell like fries

On a serious note, I would try it, I think you do need some mods to the truck before running it though.

The biodiesel I ran you didn't. You just filled up at the pump. IIRC it said it was 70% bio or something like that.

It made me nervous, but I saw plenty of big rigs in there filling up, so I did it. It turned out very anti-climatic, hardly noticable.

It was on the way to Grattan actually.

I have not seen it up here yet, But the biodiesel does have some tempurature issues as well. In Northern Canada they sell P30 in the summer and P40 for the winter. The Problem with the warm weather diesel and Bio is that is turns to gell when it get too cold.

Assuming that the productions numbers were comprable that's true. I guess I was referring to the growth stage. Let's assume for the sake of mental experiment that tomorrow every pump had biodiesel, but not everyone was using it. Therefore the lower demand and therefore lower production numbers probably translate into higher prices. Would you pay more?

If that were the case, the gubmint could eat the ~$.50 taxes to get people to buy it, since it does solve Global Warming™, which is completely accurate and irrefutable and all.

How long do you think it will take the government to figure out how to tax him for making it? It is not a matter of "IF" they will tax you for making it, it is a matter of when.

Even though it uses less natural resources™ and is arguably™ better for the environment™ and the economy™ (due to lack of dependence™ on other regions for oil)?

Re: Biodiesel

It's only better for everything if it is not built on an artificial economy.

Diesel already costs more than gasoline, I don't feel the need to pay more to bullshit myself into "doing something for the environment", or to "fight terror" or any other politicized crap someone comes up with.

Plenty of people want to make money at it, and that is great. But make them figure out how to beat the cost of oil based diesel.

Re: Biodiesel

There is a station here in San Diego that sells all manner of "Alternative" fuel. The bio-diesel hovers anywhere from 20 cents to a dollar more a gallon from regular Diesel #2.

That gas station is almost always empty.

It sits next to the very rich owner's dealership.

That same station is also, lamentably, the only one with E85 available to the public in the whole state of CA, the "alternative" fuel I as a performance enthusiast am much more interested in.

Shit, Cali has more hydrogen fueling stations than E85.
