    Home Projectors vs Plasma

Currently looking to buy into the HD thing. Was at bestbuy comparing the 1080 to the 720 resolution and from 12 feet away cant really see the benefit of having the higher resolution. In that respect I was looking at a 720 projector. The Infocus play big 5000 seems to be winning right now at $645 refurb and a spare bulb being about $400. On the other hand the Hitachi 55 inch plasma could work but its significantly more at $2500

Any recommendations under $2000 and at least 55 inches? Projector experience here?

Ping NHFF, he does this stuff for a living.

Have you thought about 55" DLPs?

If you go this route, make sure you spend some time watching a few different flicks to determine if you're one of the lucky types that sees the "rainbows".

I see them and still like my DLP, but you should know about it beforehand.

B&W movies seem to be the ones I see them in the most.

The whole plasma or projector is because the only large space is above the mantle. The corner of the living room that hosts the 36 inch Toshiba is too small for somthing sizable. Anyhow I want to plant a new bookshelf where that 36 sits.

Yeh ok I will revisit that thought again.

BTW what spurred all this is my lack of adjusting my with-holding in 2006 along with a tax deduction called "baby johnny". Rediculous huge return

You won't see any difference, IMO, between a 1080 and a 720 signal from anything over 6-7 feet away...at least in the <60 inch range.

Projectors are interesting. Goods ones offer an excellent experience but are more expensive than most plasma and LCD panels because you need more than just the projector. However, if you're looking for the biggest picture, it's the only way to go.

How bright is your room? Projectors need a darkened room in order to at least be respectable looking.

If you're looking for something around 50-60" in a flat panel-like display go with a plasma. Pioneer Elite makes some of the best on the market but they're pricey. If you're looking at bang for the buck, look at a Panasonic TH50PX600U (or 60U) for roughly $2000-2300. The TH58PX600U is going to be around $3500-4000. Both of these are recently discontinued so they might be difficult to find with the price drops. New models are coming out in March which will drive up prices again.

Keep in mind that install on a plasma will run you about $1000 to have it mounted on a wall.

    Tit for tat eh?

    It's not too far.

Cold war shooters will be there, but no ammo bros, which means not nearly the ammo selection.

If you can wait, the Costa Mesa show is much better.

What do you think about the Hitachi 55HDS69? Its $2500 at circuit city right now. Viewpoint from my couch to the mantle is about 15ft which is why I am trying to go as big as possible.

We don't sell Hitatchi but they make a good product. If they have a 55" plasma, new in box, for $2500 don't wait because they won't have it for long.

A 50" is good for 15'. Remember that if most of your viewing is SD, the picture won't look so hot the larger you go. I'd say you're good up to 60" at 15' but no bigger unless the vast majority of what you watch is HD.

Yeah, what he said. I have a projector (Sony VPL HS20)that I bought in 04 (Goo Sytem screen ) and a 37" LG LCD that we bought right before Christmas when our TV went TU. From the research I did, LCD "works" better in normal living room situations and plasma works better for the prepared "viewing room".

I have over 1000 hours on my projector bulb so far and it's worked awesome in high and low light situations. We had the Super Bowl party at my house last year and it worked awesome with the lights on. I ran it almost constantly the last year I was in Germany watching movies and it's still going strong today.

In Germany, the projector was running ~112" widescreen on the wall and the clarity was awesome. I'm not saying that porn rocks on the projector, but porn rocks on the projector.

    Re: Home Projectors vs Plasma

I'd go projector if you can control the lightsource, otherwise, LCD. Plasma you know will have a max of 60,000 viewing hours, but will start to dim before that. At least w/ LCD, you MIGHT have a chance of changing the bulb. And I think plasma uses more electricity - and runs hotter.

Projector bulbs costs $, and don't lasts more than 3000 hrs? I was going to get an HD Projector, but bought a 46" LCD instead.

if you hook up your PC at all to the screen, the 1080P resolution WILL make a difference, as your desktop will be bigger.

at work one day a few weeks ago before we all left on our routes somehow we got to talking about old school 70s porn. this one guy who works in the warehouse said when he was younger, him and some friends had a reel to reel and were playing porn on the side of the house. he said they were all laughing so hard they had to keep handing off the projector (they had to hold it)

    Re: Home Projectors vs Plasma

Well We were doing searching last night and saw that Hitachi 55 inch. Today it went on sale at Circuit City. I told the wife to go ahead and make the purchase online for me to pick up. Somehow a $150 off coupon didnt get applied. Circuit city manager wouldnt adjust for it. CC customer service in India couldnt do squat either. Ended up going back home purchasing another at CC with the discount at a store farther away and returning the exact same tv to the one by our house.

Ended up something a little more than $2500 after tax and swearing off the CC by our house. "Montebello"

Tomorrow we are off to bestbuy to get bookshelf speakers and ikea for the bookshelf.
