New Ipod= New computer
Ok. I was out today and decide to Join the "normal world, I picked up an Ipod Touch for a pretty good price, brought it home down loaded Itunes and then learned that Windows millenium won't work(it's almost 10 years old, that isn't that long in computer years is it? )
So, the delema stands now to be, do I pick up a new computer, do I pick up a new mac, or do I "borrow" a friends laptop and use it to get some stuff loaded on to this new toy?
I don't know ANYTHING about any of these systems. i have heard that the macs are better for music. I don't know what to think, I know there are some computer guys on the board... what do I do?
I plan on using the computer to upload my current CD's onto the Ipod and then deleting them as I go. I will also be crusing the internet and that should be about it. Maybe the odd resume or typed document...
Who has experiance with what. I don't need a computer that will run the united nations but, something that I don't have to back up every other day for fear of it crashing would be nice.
I would like to keep it around 1000$ if I end up going to a new set up.
Thanks for the help.
See you at GRATTAN

A cheap Dell or an iMac would be a zillion times better than Me in every way. I prefer Macs but either will do what you want. I think the Mac will be less headache as far as spyware and virii but that is certainly open to debate in the future (today the Mac is MUCH better)
Also why delete them? It is your music keep it on there in iTunes (your machine)
One other thought. The iPod touch integration with your desktop will be much better on a Mac is my guess. More bang for your buck.
Oh and the Mac Mini is LONG overdue for an update so a pause for a couple of weeks might be wise (Apple Developer show is early June and new products occur then all the time)

Check out this site once in a while. They have PCs for under 200. They're usually bottom of the line refurbished pieces of crap but for what you want it they'll serve you well for the price.
I bought an e-machine POS a few months ago when my gaming PC died. It does not play games but it works well enough for just surfing, home accounting, MS office and such.
Keep checking. They have good service.

No problems at all using my computer with XP with iTunes. I just used it to copy all of my CD's in to iTunes then I put them all on my wifes iPod. I'm not sure how much more a MAC would offer?
...dude you ride an offroad bike with slicks, 1/2 the weight of a GS, double the suspension, with a browning 50 cal going off 32" from your skull as a daily freaking driver - I'd expect anything except a nitro dragbike to be bland by comparison - SSG

What processor and how much ram does the computer have? I ran XP with all the fancy effects off on a P2 233 with 300 or so megs of ram. If you have a P3 with at Least 512 Meg ram and turn off most of the visual crap (I usually keep the bottom 4 or 5) it will run just fine.
On that note i just helped my sister buy a new laptop at Bestbuy for 600 bucks. Te big thing now is Ram get at least 2 gigs. The processor isn't as important as it used to be for normal human use. AMD's are cheap, but run hot (put in power save mode and they are ok) Pentiums are more expensive but run cooler.
Good luck.
PS. Always back up the system. External Nas / usb hard drives are cheap and if you run backup software you won't have to even think about it.

Not an iPod but a iPod Touch, that implies calendar, POC and other functions. Further in June iTouch and iPhone will be updated (should be free if you just got it NorthernRR) and I expect MANY more applications to become available. Now many will be games, more will be independent of the desktop, but some of the slickest will likely be Mac/iTouch symbiotic (my guess). A iPod Touch is more of a mini touchscreen computer than a iPod. I am plotting a new iPhone if the rumors come true (and probably if not)

If money is no problem, get a macbook 13" or pro 15 or 17". These are the best "common class" laptops made IMO. The mac (OSX Leopard) now have a neat application called the "time machine" that should assuage fears of data loss. Further, since these machines support virtual threading, you can run another OS inside them with no penalty in performance.

So Northern, by buying the new touch that IS your new computer, problem solved
If you actually want an ipod, wait for the 16gb nano
I would hve been happy to give you tech help on the Touch.

Thanks guys, I REALLY have NO idea what I am doing. I don't want to spend a ton. seems that almost everything I am looking at is around 1K... ugh...
I am NOT a "techy" guy... at all... I just want my Ipod to work.
what is the big difference between the mac and the PC?
See you at GRATTAN

Get the Mac...you'll be glad. You don't need to be computer savvy to use one and they run smooth. A refurb iMac is right around $1k.

I may be out on a limb here but don't I have to "load" the initial "stuff" onto the touch from the apple site?
I am going looking for the instructions...

It's Who You Know That Counts
Bah, get an el cheapo one running windows, preferably XP (and set it on classic view), from newegg or something.
You're not techy, and you're used to windows from 10 years of usage. Don't go down the rat-hole with Mac OS.
They're kinda nice and all that, but I'm constantly annoyed with the little differences from what I'm used to.
It's no easier to put music on an ipod with a macbook...it's all just iTunes. Even my Dad can make that work, so I'm sure you can.
Return the Touch, get a Nano, or a maybe a photo if you need the space, and put the difference to a computer.

No you can Purchase stuff via iTunes online but you can also load your own stuff. I have a mix of CDs, iTunes purchases and LPs that I digitized on mine.
