Update on my brother...
Well, some of you may remember that I posted on fb.org about my brother's diagnosis with cancer . I have wanted to give an update since then, but so much happened so quickly that I didn't want to have to update every other day. Here's a condensed version:
Joff's oncologist in Seattle referred him to the Mayo Clinic because the two doctors who specialized in his type of cancer at the Cancer Center in Seattle were moving on to different fields. So, he and his girlfriend went to MN (where she is originally from). The docs at Mayo disagreed with the diagnosis that the docs in Seattle gave. They thought that it was not a Malignant Peripheral Nerve Sheath Tumor, but that it was a common type of bone cancer. This would change his treatment from Radiation to Chemo. Oh, they decided this after he had been "tattooed" for his radiation treatments.
So, they got the diagnosis squared away, and now the decision had to be made about where he was going to receive treatment. Again, to summarize, he and his girlfriend were having problems, and it was putting an added strain on both of them. She ended up going back to Seattle, and she got a job and began to settle in. After a bit of deliberation, Joff (along with my parents and I) figured that if he needed someone to take care of him during his year-long treatment, MN and Seattle were not good options. So, he is now in North Carolina, staying at my parent's house.
My mom is retired, so she has the time to help him out and make sure things go smoothly. Initially it was thought that he would receive his treatment at Duke Medical Center. He ended up getting referred to Wake Forest Medical Center in Winston-Salem, which is only about 35 minutes from my parent's place. He just started his chemo yesterday, and as we speak he should be finishing up with his first round of chemo drugs. He'll be staying in the hospital until Sunday so they can hydrate and monitor him. All of the drugs that he gets are administered through a catheter that he had implanted in his chest.
Believe me, that's actually the short version. Since Joff's been in N.C. he's been a bit depressed, and very bored (In this case the two are intertwined). I think that his spirits are brightening a bit as he gets used to being down there, but whenever I talk to him he's still saying how bored he is--he's normally a very physically active guy, so this is tough for him.
Anyhoo, just wanted to give a quick update on what's going on, and I'll try to write more over the coming year when newsworthy things come up. Thanks to all for your prayers and support.
P.S. One more quick story: When Joff got back to Seattle to get things in order (store his M3 ) before he moved to NC, he had a package from a few of his high school buddies. The grapevine works well apparently, and a few old friends thought that he'd have a lot of spare time on his hands, so they pitched in and bought him an Xbox 360! I am not a huge video game guy, but I do like playing now and again. However, I am only familiar with PS2 games. Does anyone have any recommendations for a good game or two that I could get him? He has Tiger Woods '06 or '07, and one other game. I'm thinking he might like a Need For Speed type game, or a first person shooter.
Thanks all, ride and live safe.
Justin

Gears of War.
It freakin' rules.
I'm not much into games, but just to play that online with friends makes me want to buy a 360.

Yup...Gears of War. It's third person, but it rocks for online play. Also, might check in to Call of Duty and either of the Tom Clancy games (Ghost Recon and Rainbow 6: Vegas)
Glad to hear his spirits are up at least a little bit. Strange that his diagnosis was changed, but whatever gets him on the path to being healthy is a good one.

Re: Update on my brother...
My cousin recently finished chemo for leukemia, though it's far from over. She ended up divorced from her new husband not long after chemo started.
Your brother has a hell of a road ahead of him, video games are great, and it'd be one of the first things I bought.
But when it gets bad, he won't be playing. One of the best things you can do is figure out how to rotate friends and family in and out so he's got differing compnay frequently.

Re: Update on my brother...
Is the bone cancer termed multiple myeloma? My brother in law had that for 22 years and ended up with 2 complete bone marrow transplants through the City of Hope.
The stuff to watch for is the overall effect of the treatment. There are so many side effects that taken all together, the cancer ends up being the least of the problems.
I wish you and your family the best, and get him a laptop .

Both for him and visitors.
Also a camera in the room.

Re: Update on my brother...
I am encouraged about Mayo's diagnosis - seems a bit more optimistic.
I'll keep him in my thoughts for the chemo treatment.. keep us updated. Also if he's bored, he can join in here and tell us stories about you.

I am sure that would lift his spirits!
We are praying for Joff, and all of you!

Re: Update on my brother...
Thanks everyone for your wishes, I really do appreciate it--and I know Joff does too.
Abtech-I'm not sure what the type of bone cancer it is, but what I can tell you is that we were told that it is the "most common" type--whatever that is.
Whatever it is, we do feel that it is a lot more optimistic than what he was originally faced with.
I'll try to give periodic updates, but I'm sure that it'll be a long and difficult time for him, and I'm betting that not a lot will change from day to day.
Thanks again to all, and let me just say that I'm ready for winter to be over any time meow!

Re: Update on my brother...
I lost my dad to multiple myeloma almost 4 years ago at age 76. Dad was as strong as an OX all his life He held out strong for 13 years after his diagnosis and only really slowed down his last year. He fell countless times but never broke anything. Our family is known for heavy bones.
The very last ditch effort was Thalidomide. It really sapped him of energy at a time when he didnt have any. I still question that move on his dr's part.

It sounds like the Mayo diagnosis is an improvement. Always get a second opinion, right?
Tell Joff that he and the family have folks all over praying for yall through the rough days ahead.

Re: Update on my brother...
Your brother will be in my families prayers and thoughts.
As it's already been stated, rotate the friends and family as often as possible. My wife's aunt and sister in law both battled cancer and won. We did everything we could to keep a fresh smling face their corner and gave them appropriate space when we knew they needed it.
Her aunt had a type of bone cancer and her sister in law is 3 years out from a diagnosis of stage 3 melonoma.
Best of everything for your brother.

Well, when he's in the hospital for treatment I believe he's at the Wake Forest Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Otherwise, he's at my parent's house in Jamestown, which is right outside of Greensboro.
Quick update: I spoke with Joff yesterday, and aside from constantly throwing up he said that it wasn't too bad. But, coupled with the vomiting is a serious lack of energy to do pretty much anything. Once that passes, things are fine though. He said that the drugs he is getting now are some of the harshest meds he'll get, so all things considered it could be a lot worse.
I think I'm going to send him a best buy gift card so he can pick out some games that he likes. I'll definitely share the recommendations that you all gave me! Oh, and I just might have to pick up "The Departed" for me while I'm there... If you haven't seen it, go rent it or pick it up ASAP!
