    Shaving methods

I'm curious what all you guys are using. For nearly 20 years, I've tried every new razor that has hit the market: 2, 3,4 blades, Electric, Lubricating strips, Pivoting head, Flex blade, etc. The results are typicaly the same: ok but not great shave and razor burn and tiny nicks on my neck. I kept going back to the "lesser of all evils", the Atra 2 twin blade, pivoting head. A few months ago I noticed many stores no longer carry the Gillette blades, so I had to use the store brand, which are of much lesser quality. Frustrated, I tossed them all in the trash and steped back 100 years in technology and started using a double edge saftey razor, shaving soap and brush. Believe it or not, there is a large following of DE and straight razors, you can by quality new DE razors cheaply, and the wide varity of blades, each with different cutting qualitys, allow you to "tune" your DE razor to suit your face. I get better, closer shaves, no razor burn, and no nicks unless my technique gets sloppy. Also spend alot less $$$ on razors...DE blades are 12 to 45 cents each and last as long as a $4 Mach 3 cartrage. The cons are it takes a little longer, however afficiandos of traditional shaving dont see spending some quality time with a precision instrument and nice smelling soaps as a bad thing. Quite relaxing and satisfying in fact.

Mach 3 here. I can't shave any more than every other day otherwise I get really bad razor burn. It's the best method I've found to date. Been thinking about trying one of the better electric razors but I cringe at the thought of spending $200 on one.

    Re: Shaving methods

I've tried a lot of different stuff and I get my best shave with a Mach III. The cost is annoying though... they've done a good job engineering them to only be good for 2 or 3 shaves.

The electric gadgets don't give the feeling of clean and fresh like a blade. Most barbers won't do straight razor shaves anymore for liability reasons. I'd like to try it though.

Mach 3 here. I shave on Monday Wed Fri only. My facial hair laughs at electric razors, I've tried regular and wet or dry models. They all suck for me.

When I'm at home in my apartment I have a Schick Quattro and love it but when I'm away camping or with the military I use Schick Xtreme 3 disposables. They're nice for a disposable with a pivoting head and everything and at about a buck a razor it really isnt too hard on the wallet.

For me though the key to a good shave has to be the shaving gel/cream and good ol trust Edge Advance shave gel is what does the best job

Mach 3 here too. And I'm a whole head shaver. Every day for Uncle Sam. I've found that if you attempt to use a blade after the blue strip has been worn about half way, you better have a steady hand.

But I can still get about a week and a half out of each blade.

Gillette Ultra something or another. Try using Nutrogena Face/razor prep for men prior to shaving. World of difference.

Neutrogena is good too. I've been using Nivea for Men shaving cream (for men with thenthitive skin) for the last couple of months. No more razor burn.

    Re: Shaving methods

I originally started shaving with a gilette sensor excel (2 blades), and I've tried many others but I still use a sensor excel. I get about the same closeness with a mach 3, but I don't like the pivot point and it's a ton more expensive.

I too shave only every other day, otherwise it hurts like hell. Truth be told, I don't shave all that often nowadays. No one gives me crap if I'm not clean-shaven around work, so I shave whenever I feel like it. Mostly it's the grow a beard, shave once, grow a beard, shave once cycle for me...

It's not referred to as "stubble" down there.

    Re: Shaving methods

    Gillette Fusion, 5 blades.

I was given it by my Dad who tried it once and hated it. The shaving head (or whatever) is so big it's kinda ungainly, but it gives me the best mix I've found between a decent shave, and no burn.

Funny this thread came up as I've been trying different things lately and noticed leaving the shaving cream on my face longer, until it tingles for a bit which takes minutes, helps the shave out quite a bit. If I use plain soap, it's just deadly, blood everywhere.

Funny you mention the brush/DE; my Gramps does it and I've always wondered...maybe I'll try that.

I don't shave every day...one of the benefits of being a blonde engigeek.

    I can't remember, I think they're like $3-5 each. I've only bought them a couple times.

For me they work better to the point it's worth it, and I use them well past the blue being worn out without trouble.

    Re: Shaving methods

When I first started shaving I was using disposable razors. I moved onto what .... it was mach 2 back then? Used those for years fighting off ingrown hairs. Always seemed to have a scab on my face growing up. About 8 years ago I met this girl.... who would later become my wife. Gen worked at a remington store selling shavers, knives and whatever else.

She bought me a cheap remington shaver... abouts $40. Used it and didnt like as I had to rub it on my face about 4 times more than a regular razor.

She bought me a Remington Intercept M8210. Used this for years. It was the best!! The batteries stopped holding a charge and a replacement intercept could not be sourced.

She got me a Remington MicroScreen 3 TCT . This was ok but not as good as the Intercept. I used this for years and it has kinda gone missing.

Frustrated I went to radio shack and purchased replacement nicad batteries and did the surgery to revive my old intercept. JOY!!

One day around a three day weekend I left my intercept at work. Feeling frustrated and inclined to try something better. I ventured down to bestbuy. I laid out $160 for a Braun Complete 360.

The Braun 360 is an OK shaver but I need to rub it on my face about 8 times more than what the old Intercept did in 2 passes. I still use the Braun just to justify its existence and to let the kids sleep at 5AM. The Intercept is just a tad more noisey.

    Major points:
I have never gotten a close shave from an electric razor. Hardly ever get an ingrown hair. Takes at least 2 weeks of dedication to an electric shaver before your face adjusts.

You can electric shave and commute when you are running late.

Mach 3 Turbo, I think. I only shave every other day as well (or not at all over the weekend). I think the shaving cream does make a difference on razor burn/bumps for me. Aveeno is pretty good.

Gillette Mach 3 for the head and the face. Every other day I use an electric shaver on the face just for convenience. The head is another story in itself, DO NOT TRY AND USE DISPOSABLE RAZORS ON YOUR HEAD. Unless you like to bleed profusely.

    Re: Shaving methods

Fusion Power here. wasn't sure about the whole power thing. but I think it makes a very tiny difference. I usually shave once or twice a week. I've never really had any trouble with razor burn with any razor. I've ever shaved with just water and it didn't really give any burn. granted my skin feels softer using cream. I think the trick to a good close shave is going against the grain. usually I go with it first to get most of it then against to really get close.

edit: I voted cartridge but I've rocked the grizzly adams a couple times. last time though I shaved it off after winter cause it was irritating rubbing on the cheek pads of my helmet
