The Navy in Spaaaaace!

Seems that the spooks lost a bird a few weeks ago, and now the Navy is going to blast it out of the sky:

Officials: U.S. to try to shoot down errant satellite - CNN.com

While they say they are worried about Hydrazine, I can't help but wonder two things:

1) This is a not so subtle message to the Chinese that we too can knock out satellites, and from sea platforms that are all over the globe any given day.

2) This may have more to do with ensuring whatever is on the satellite gets destroyed, and not chance it with re-entry.

Either way, the Navy is going to get to flex its muscles here soon. Just goes to show that the AEGIS platform is still going strong!

Yeah, I don't believe for a second this is about the hydrazine on that thing...my first thoughts were your 1 and 2...in that order.

It's not #1. Satellites orbit so they tend to come around for picking off at leisure a few times a day. The exception are geosynch ones and that would make a lousy spy sat.

Yes, but we haven't had a public display of ASAT tech like the Chinese did last year with one of their weather birds.

While we have all assumed we could do it, and we may have even tested it in hush hush fashion, now it is a publicly stated and demonstrated capability.

Somehow I doubt this is our first attempt at it.

The debris field may make for some interesting "space junk" to track.

All the above IMO. Just an opportunity and a message not only China but to Korea and lets not forget the Iranian's that just launched a "rocket meant for future LEO's." Yeah, right. Probably a message to the world. The BEAR is beginning to stir. Have been many intercepts of Bear A/C off the coast of Alaska and two came to look at a battle group recently. First time in almost 15 yrs a BEAR has buzzed a US battle group. Back in the day, it was nearly a daily occurence.

My bet, a message to the WORLD! Let's see how it plays.

China concerned by U.S. satellite missile plan | Reuters

Typical communist, tossing up stuff and saying we have to comply when they just did FAR worse to something that was not coming down.

Can't seem to find anything online but the local news channel WMUR just did a bit on the satellite and apparently NH agencies have been notified that the damn thing (or at least debris from it) could be heading our way tomorrow night.

Better your way than China or Russia. The odds of hit hitting anyone on a miss is VERY low and on a hit even lower. The odds of recoverable goodies that those that want to kill your family might want is actually reasonable on a miss from what I have heard. Of course you could road trip somewhere

You mean score 1 for the Army guys who designed the front end (tracking and guidance) of the missile.

they just said on the news it was a 90% chance it hit the tank. the video showed a pretty cool explosion, kinda blueish.

Would it not be possible for the US to shoot one down without everyone knowing?

If it was a test surely they could do it without a press release.

I don't know if we could or not. I kinda doubt it.

Since missiles leaving the earth can be ICBMs...it's best to let everyone know what you're up to lest they think they're in the middle of a nuclear scenario.
