mx
made a trip to the local mx track with my trx450r to make a few laps since i had not been on one in a while. well on my second lap, i was going aroung a rutted up double and somehow wound up on my head. i went to skip across a drain ditch and apparently caught the edge with the back tires. my buddies though it was funny as hell. after i stoped roling, the track official checked on me, i fliped the atv back over and limped back to the pits. i was ok, my head broke my fall.
i was knocked coo coo for a few mins.my friend had his yz450f dirtbike out there so i took it for a spin later on in the day and took it easy. they feel so much heavier than their 2 stroke counter parts. after riding the street bike, the dirtbike felt weird. i kept trying to lean it like i was on the street. i am going to have to get me some more seat time on a dirt bike now.

Re: mx
i remember why i stay away from the mx tracks now.
people always ask me can i stunt, or do this or do that on the bike, and i ask them, have you ever hit the dirt hard? ususally they respond no. i always tell them as hard as the dirt feels, i dont want to feel any asphalt, or trash my bike

Re: mx
I've never done the dirt thing.... I test rode three dual sport bikes this past summer though and I had a blast. I may even try to get some real dirt time this sunday...
I hear it can help your throttle control by sliding around in the dirt too.I've only slid in the rain at VIR. -jh

Re: mx
I raced MX for most of my life. Ended it in the +30A class. The last year I raced was 2003 - and in my class blue smokers didn't have a chance. I raced tricked out KX250's till I switched to a 520 KTM. NEVER EVER EVER considered going back - no comparison.
Still - I agree the displacement advantage allowed thumpers is hard to overcome. As far as 250R's go - here's mine. Haven't even looked at it in years. |

Re: mx
Houser, ESR, Dominator, Works, etc etc etc. - pretty much everything. I was going to make it into an MX quad - I did in fact race it once. It's AMA width (50") and all that stuff. The motor is still only a 250, although K&T in Utah ported it to be pretty extreme. It's ported for all topend - and if I have my smallest dome in my CoolHEad I have to run 113 octane race gas.
Here's a pic during assembly - I was waiting on the frame gussetting and powdercoating at this point. |

Re: mx
LOL! I wish I had taken some before and after shots of mine as well - mine was every bit as bad as yours looks in that pic.
Nice quad! Looks great! Is the motor ported at all? How does that run compared to your 450 in a simple drag race? |

Re: mx
this is the 3rd one that i have redone. the first one was stock suspension with a fmf pipe, std cyl ported with a custom head, reed cage and carb. the one i just sold had an aftermarket axle, the rest of the suspension was stock, and i put a cr250 cylinder on it with a ported reed cage, custom cut head, curtis sparks pipe, and a regular keihen pwk carb. this build, i have the a arms, axle, ohlins fronts, houser stem, all the brakes and rolling stock came off a 400ex, makes replacement parts easier to find. for the motor, a 330 prox cyl, cool head with custom dome, cleaned up boysen rad valve, lightened counter balance, pvl ignition, home made intake(looks like the esr), ftz fatty pipe and a pwk 39mm carb.
the 250 that i just sold, in a drag right before i freshened it up, my 450 would hang with the 250 until high gear. the 450 is ported, wiesco 13:1, hot cam stage 2 and a dasa pipe. my 330 just blows it out of the water. to give you an idea on the way it runs, i am running a 15 33 sprocket combo on the 330, and it will light the tires up on the road with no problem. i also have an old quadzilla that i resurected. that one is on alky.

Re: mx
My current setup is a ported stock cylinder with a cool head, ported CR Rad valve with a 38mm keihin taper bored to a 39.5. It runs good but will only just barely beat a piped and jetted 450 (and that's only when it gets traction). I always wanted to do a big bore by either Eddie Sanders or LRD - your 330 sounds awesome. Thing is since my accident I can't even start this quad let alone race MX on it - so there it sets. |

Re: mx
that sucks that its just sitting there. the big bore i have started out as an esr and was redone by ftz. they have done all of my 2 stroke porting and machine work.
here is my off road fleet

Re: mx
Man! Makes me miss riding dirt, which I haven't done since 05.
I bet that LT500 rips. My friend had one and on the rare occasion that it actually ran, it was awesome. Here's my old fleet. Now I'm down to just one, big, ugly, heavy busa.

Re: mx
why did you get rid of the 2 bikes and get the one?
but them big busas will move when done right. i know a guy that had one of the ktm 520 dirtbikes. he liked it, but had a time getting parts for it. i put that 500 together and the clutches did not feel quite right but i let it be and kept messing with the carb, that alky was a new experience trying to get right, but i got the carb right and wound up frying the clutches. i took it to the drag strip before i got the carb dialed in and ran a 7.70 with it. i am curious to see what it will do with the carb right and a good set of clutches in it.

Re: mx
Isn't FTZ in Missourri? They're aren't that far from me. They did a friend of mines 250R and it was insane - would smoke mine. The pipe it had looked like a snake that swallowed a watermelon.
I only had the Hardley for awhile to help a buddy get through his divorce. Then since I have vertebrae L2 through L7 fused together I figured I'd better get rid of the KTM. The busa is actually perfect for me - there's nothing but straight roads here anyway, and you can comfortably ride all day long two up. |

Re: mx
yeah they are in missourri. i wound up putting a dent in the bottom of my pipe from where it is close when you kick it. i wear steel toed shoes all the time and where it kicked back it wound up denting the pipe.
that is deffinately a good bike for the open road. i met up with a guy one day that was trying to put his to the test on some curves. he was doing good with it, but it looked like it was working the shit out of him though.

Re: mx
Quick,
You don't happen to have an extra 250R rear shock do you? Stock or otherwise? |

Re: mx
i might have one in the attic. actually i am pretty sure i have one. i dont know if it need to be charged or not. i had it on a 400ex, and when i was taking it off, somehow the line that goes from the ressi to the shock got loosened so some oil seeped out. i dont think it lost its pressure though.

Ahhhh Dirt.... haven't been out for a couple of weekends. I'm due. I feel it helps you on the street and track. Especially if you have an off track/road experience.
