I was watching the 11 PM news in Detroit just now when they ran a story about a local man who received a liver translant. They went on to explain that they normally don't reveal the donor, but they had special permission in this case.
They then showed a picture of Rich Herald as the donor, and explained that he had passed away in a motorcycle accident.
You will likely be able to view the story sometime tomorrow on the station's web site "clickondetroit.com". They also mentioned that the Detriot Free Press is running a story about Rich and the transplant recipient in their Sunday morning edition (7/15).
I can't imagine what Rich's family must me going through now, but I hope they are able to find some comfort in the lives that were saved from his tragic accident.
Most of you knew Rich far better than I as we had only met that morning. My admiration for him continues to grow, however.
I just talked it over with my wife again. We both agree we are donors.
There are no words to express my respect and admiration for Richard and his family.
We put the url from this forum on the plaque that will be just to the right on the tech shed whenever we go out on the track at Grattan. I hope over the years people check out these threads to see the kind of person Rich was, and the way he has affected our lives.
Rich valued all his friendships among the people on this board. Thanks especially to Hammer and NHfirefighter13 (Randy and Chris) for their work on the plaque, as well as the many who contributed to it and set it in place.
