I think we've all been slacking this year. I sent mine on Friday.
I think Abtech has waited to post the confirmed list because he didn't want it to have just 2 people on it.

    25% tire wear question here.

If, due to the lack of curves in Iowa, the center is worn more than 25% but the sides are worn more like 5%, can we average that together to produce a number that equates to, "less than 25%."

Not if the profile is skewed to the point where the center is flattened. This causes several problems with transitions from straight up to full lean. I know tires aren't cheap, but a new set at the track will work great for the street as well once you head back home.

Pretty much everybody shows up to the Grattan event with new rubber. After 3 days on the track, you'll be glad you did.

If I'm able to come it will only be one day of riding. At newbie, Idaho country boy pace. New tires were sort of in the budget for this summer anyway but I was planning on it being after my loan disbursement at the end of July.

Well that was kind of my plan anyway. It just seems like the part that I need for the track is still there (hasn't ever been touched). They are the original OEM tires though from 2002 (I shouldn't have admitted that) so that's why I was planning to replace them.

yeah, what Z said. They're not only squared off, but probably hard due to the age. It's not worth the risk to try and use them on the track. It's a lot cheaper to replace the tires than other stuff.....

All I know is that if that tire came through tech at most trackdays, they would send you away. That tire has age written all over it.

Best advise out there is never try to stretch the life of a tire out. 300 dollars in tires or several grand in repairs and a bike that will never look the same?

And dont feel you have to go out and get the stickiest tires out there. I've only recently switched to Pilot Powers from the sport touring tires I had on there as a track newbie. At least when you get back to the street they will last longer.

Yeah, actually that discolored section wasn't there when I left for yesterdays ride and was there when I came back. That's when I knew for sure they were done. I have seen much more "square" tires before so I thought maybe there was a little more left in the tire. Unfortunately the outer 2/3 are basically full tread depth. I was making some progress on them when I lived in Idaho but I moved to Iowa three weeks after buying the bike and that seems to have changed things. Do you think they'll last a 600 mile ride to Grattan? That way I could put fresh stuff on right at the track.

    Edit: 541 miles.

You are riding that bike in....? I am always impressed with those who do this. Ride in, set-up bike, ride for three days then ride back.

Just make sure you have a back up way of getting home, if problems occur.

No due to the discoloring I am betting you don't have 100.

That is good mileage, and I agree with SoB, you might not make 100 before cords are showing. The tire on my VFR doesn't look that bad and a cord popped out just the other day and that was a 40 mile commute. Not fun to be on the road looking for tires when it decides to shed it's last skin ... been there done that.

Besides, one of the issues with worn tires like that is the transitions. You really feel that squareness on the track. On the street you might write it off as road surface, but on the track you'd likely be chasing chassis setup to fix that "wiggle when I turn in".

What is the status on garage sharing? Any openings, or should I start a new one?
