Dont have one, but have ridden and worked on a couple. Damn fine bike for its purpose. The Jeep Wrangler of motorcycles...not pretty or fancy but gets the job done

I'll admit I've considered joining the KLR cult. That type of riding really appeals to me. Lots of dirt roads I would love to explore.

Yes. And they're only about 6 feet wide so if another car is coming you have to pull off to the side to let them by.

Re: KLR-650

Had one I bought used - a 97 with 30,000 miles on it - never had to do a thing to it other than change oil etc. They are very good at what they are designed to do 70/30 road/dirt but a bit heavy if you're used to true dirt bikes. That said, it would take me places that I won't even consider with the 929.

welcome aboard edp

Yeah 70/30 is a good combination...as long as that 30 isn't too sick.
I did take my 97 onto some evil stuff, it's actually had both wheels off the ground at once, that was scary as hell , but it's been up single track and crossed rivers - all while keeping a steady 85 on the highway too and fro. it is the bike that I cannot ever really part with

Re: KLR-650

I bought that KLR to ride the cart roads that criss cross the canefields surrounding Vaucluse - my son was about 11 then and had just started riding a Honda 80 4 stroke. We could ride for several hours without crossing a public road and got to some places very close to our house that we never knew existed.
Agree its a great road bike - best we can do legally here is 50 mph - some of the secondary roads that I used to ride were bordering on offroad given the state of disrepair with gaping potholes appearing right in front of you in tight blind corners. Rainy season combined with heavily laden 14 wheelers grind the roads up at an alarming rate - the surface is never boring......

Does a KLR-250 count? I take mine everywhere except for extended highway.

Anything with two wheels and a motor count I've been flogging my 250 for 15 years now and see little reason to change.

Thats what my other half rides, a KL-250 actually (the Sherpa). Nice little bike on the street, it's like a big minibike

You guys know about the KLRworld site (?); lots of support there, even for Sherpas.

SSG, tell me more about the KLR. How does it do commuting and what kind of range do you have on it? Is it fun running backroads at legal speeds?

Been thinking and thinking about finding a 90's klr also. Perferebly one without jetting andd a pipe. From what i have read this really adds little power and hurts the fuel.

IF you do buy one make sure the dohicky is fixed in the motor or it will gerade at 10k or so.

Sometimes no, often times yes, some sooner, some later. A definate weak part of the motor design.
