May not be much to some of you..

This ride may not be much to some of you but for me with only a year of street riding experience, this is going to be a hell of a ride. It'll be taking place the beginning of may or sometime shortly thereafter, weather permitting.

The Route

Anybody have any advice for making a ride like this?

363 miles shouldn't be that bad. Pace yourself, and you'll do fine. Changing position on the bike helps a lot, and if you're not on any time constraints, take it easy and make lots of stops.

Avoid major highways. I can ride much further when I avoid droning along.

Re: May not be much to some of you..

And be sure to stretch your back and legs at each stop. That does wonders for me while riding a long distance.

If you can get out a week earlier and do a 120-200 mile trip as a warm up, you will also be amazed at how well you'd be able to do the 360 miles. I find that my first 200 mile day is killer, but builds the muscles back that let me go great distances with no worries later in the year. Consider it spring training, and don't be afraid to go a longer distance the next time out because you will keep hurting less the more you do it.

OK 360 is worth starting the bike

If you start getting tired in the knees or wrists stop and rest BEFORE it gets to sore. Once you get sore you stay sore.
Gel inserts in the boots reduce vibration
Avoid a backpack if possible
Avoid hitting a moose

A big . I'm tired after 200 miles on the highway, but can go back to back 500 mile days on the 2 lanes. Glad you have that opportunity ... even if the 2 lanes in that area are probably pretty straight, like the ones in Michigan

Re: May not be much to some of you..

As mentioned, stop to stretch often. I usually have to stop every 120 miles for gas, anyway. Pack snacks. Also water. Get yourself a CamelBak. I find on long days it's great to be able to get a sip of water while I'm riding. I clip the sipper tube to my collar so I can get to it while I'm riding.

One step ahead of you there. I picked up a 2 litre Camelbak last week and planned on filling it halway with water and the other half with ice so it'll stay colder longer.

Re: May not be much to some of you..

Just did 2k miles this past weekend. A few things that help:

1) Eat light the night before your ride. Its hard to move motorcycle pants around to poo.

2) If you start to get monkeybutt hop off the bike for five minutes, even just on a side road. Drink a drink or smoke a cigarette.

3) Stand up on the pegs occasionally to get air to your dark side.

4) On straights let your legs dangle in the wind. Its fun and helps your knees feel better.

5) Make sure your destination already has cold beer waiting for you.

6) The less stuff you have to pack the less stuff you have the potential to lose.

7) Don't worry about making time. Enjoy the scenery.

8) The dirt road will not turn back to paved within the next few miles.

9) Have fun. Longer trips make great stories.

This is a picture of last weekend on the way home from Arkansas. I am the one putting on the jacket.

LOL! Been there...

I also hate popping over a hill when the pavement turns to gravel with no warning.

Been there too ...

As far as the road not turning back to pavement, those can be some great adventures that you will remember for years. I've had a fully loaded VFR750 down some roads (and sometimes lack thereof) that would have some dual-sport riders turning around. They still leave a smile on my face when thinking back

reminds me of the first time I "led" a group ride and was trying to be Mr. big shot with the secret twisty shortcut. I found out why no one took that shortcut, and luckily those that I was with were stopped at the edge of the pavement to be sure and laugh at me as I came back up the road (they knew).

I had that happen, replace gravel with snow, once.
