Have you rejetted yours? Does it make much of a difference or will I just use more fuel?

You need to check and see what the bike has for jetting now. If it already has the K&N, it might have already been done. Also check the needles if you see that the main jets have been changed.

It shouldn't be too hard to get to the jets from where I am now so I'll check.

You'll have fun if it's your first time removing/installing V4 carbs

Will I have to remove the carbs to check the jets? I'm not sure I want to get that intimate with this thing right now.

You'll need to remove the carbs to get the float bowls off. It's really not that big of an ordeal. Loosen upper and lower clamps on the rear carbs, loosen the top ones only for the front carbs. Pry the rears out first. When putting them back on, do it in reverse and leave the rear carb boots angled back toward the rear and they practically fall into place.

I've seen enough posts over the years whining about this process to not completely believe that statement. When I'm done am I going to have go through a re-synch, re-adjust process? All of that is new to me. Getting fueling adjusted correctly on the single carb 'tard was challenging for me.

You shouldn't need to re-synch, the carbs are mounted to a solid "bowl".

I didn't re-jet mine, and I doubt the K&N (even properly oiled) flows substantially more air than a new Honda paper element. If the bike is 'de-snorkeled' or other mods have been done to it, it 'might' need to be rejetted - you should be able to tell by looking at the plugs.

It gets out of its own way - that's all I ask of a streetbike.

I probably should go with the "if it ain't broke" mentality before tearing off all of the carbs.

Pulled all the plugs. They look perfect and identical.

Whether or not the K&N stays in there depends on the delta between the cost of a new paper filter and the cleaner and oil for the K&N. I HATE cleaning and oiling filters.

Pulled out what the manual calls the sub-air filter last night to wash and oil it per the instructions and it just disintegrated in my fingers. New one ordered for $3.13. Unfortunately a new Honda Air Filter is $60. I guess I'll clean the K&N.

I found a coolant hose directly under the carbs that appears to be leaking. Apparently slowly but leaking none the less. I can't see any way to get to it other than pulling the carbs so I guess I will be doing that after all. Both the front and rear valve covers have small oil leaks as well. In the records that came with the bike there are reciepts for them being done with the valve job at 16K. That was in '01. I may go ahead and take care of them again now.

Pry with what? Where? How hard? I expected that maybe I'd at least be able to budge them once everything was loosened.

Big screwdriver or prybar against the carb base (big aluminum "bowl" that the carbs are mounted to). Place a piece of wood or something on top of the rear cam cover for a leverage point.

That's $1000 more than I paid for one that hadn't been repainted and had lower miles...and mine was also from Jersey.

Managed to get 57mpg out of my last tank of fuel. Most of that was commuting/running errands around town. She likes the premium fuel much better than the regular unleaded so I'll probably be sticking to that. Had about half a can of Seafoam left over from the carb job on the F4 so I poured that in the tank too. Can't say it made any sort of a noticeable difference but I'm sure it didn't hurt it.
