The new ride

I keeping with my 'addiction' and always wanting more, I sold my CBR F4 over a week ago and with the weather finally getting nice here in Montana, I just couldn't wait any longer.

I caught wind of a friend of mine selling his 929 a few weeks ago. We were finally in the state at the same time and so I head over to Bozeman this past weekend to pick her up. He had laid it down in a ditch while on a ride with a group that I frequently ride with, so I was able to get corroboration on the damage. It sat all winter with no attention (save for winterization).

Most of the body work is FUBAR'ed. The headlight and its mounting tabs are money. One of the engine covers is scuffed. Other than that, she's mechanically spot-on.

Over the winter, he ordered any spare part that I would need to get her back to homeostasis, including a Repsol body kit. The body work is one of those Hong Kong specials and when he told me that, I tempered my expectations. Having seen it, I'm impressed, although it remains to be seen how the body will fit on. I also need a right clip-on, which he'll be sending me. It also needs a new windscreen. Otherwise, I have two boxes of parts that need to go on it. Time to wrench!

He also gave me a spare Erion swing arm and a spare rear will, complete with a tire (Dunlop), cush drive, sprocket and brake disc. I plan on swapping out the swing arm in favor of the Erion unit. The only down side of the bike is that he got a little polish happy and the entirety of the frame, swing arm, rear sets, everything - was polished. I'm not a fan of bling so the frame will blacked out this fall.

I was only able to snap a shot with my camera phone. So you'll excuse the poor quality of the picture. I'll try and get some nicer ones tonight.

Congrats! That should make a sweet rebuild.

I've always loved the 929/954's!

I really want a 'project' bike of some sort but I DO NOT (trying to convince myself) have time for it. It would be BAD, BAD, BAD for me to get something that needs work.

The 929/954 seemed to be the peak of open class Honda STREET-bikes.

They've had to move way more to the track end of the spectrum with the 1000RRs.

Minus the trunk, the new Blade is as streetable as the 929/954 believe it or not. Seat to clip-ons, and seat to peg is pretty good. It makes a good street bike.

Have you sat on them back to back? They feel pretty different to me.

Don't get me wrong, I'd take an 08 over a 929 any day of the week, but I'm track focused in general.

Yes ... well, I have plenty of time, sadly. I live in a town dangerously devoid of any young, single, social scene. And since I don't have a girlfriend or anything that resembles one, I have plenty of time in the evening to get her back to shape. And yes ... I threw in that "homeostasis" just for you. Glad someone could appreciate the reference!

That was my thought as this bike is going to be all but strictly street. My goal was to find something that has stood the test of time, design wise, yet not be a total monster in power. While I do like other models/makes of bikes, the 929 has always caught my eye. I actually prefer that it is down on power compared to other open-classers as I was more concerned about design, chassis, handling and the like.

And in Montana, at nearly 5,000 feet, having the extra power to compensate for the loss due to elevation helps. Interestingly, I find the ergos of the 929/954 much more accommodating than my F4 ... go figure.

Indeed. The headlights will be a god-send when riding at night here in Montana where a deer on the road is as common as another car. The good thing about the rebuild is that it is only cosmetic. I realize that the Hong Kong body work will take some finagling to get fit properly, but I also know that this will be there only 929 Repsol around ... well at least around this neck of the woods. It will be a good excuse to drink some beer to calm the beast while wrenching!

Congratulations!

The polish doesn't look bad at all - might want to give it a season before you paint it..

I'm thinking a Colin Edwards WSBK 2002 stars and stripes scheme would look mighty fine.

Perhaps. To try and keep the swingarm and rear wheel clean from chain lube is going to be a PITA. So it is really more my laziness than anything. I'll let the frame mellow on me for a while just to see. Besides, I can't do much of anything with it this season anyway.

It would look quite good. But the seller already threw in that Hong Kong Repsol body kit. So that's going on first. If I don't like it, I'll hawk it on fleaBay and go with something more fitting. But it will do for now.

I know. I'm using Silkolene right now. I love its performance, but it flings a little too much for me. I think I need to stay out of the throttle a little more or else be a little smoother. In any case, after this can, I'll try some of that 'dry' stuff.

Put in the ditch last fall. The main fairing is cracked around the headlight to the point of not being repairable. And all but one other fairing is scratched and/or cracked. Some could have been been salvaged, repainted, etc., but this guy went ahead and picked up that Repsol fairing kit. So I'll see what I can do with that.

The tank would still need to be painted to match. But since I'm short on cash, want to get riding, and would just as soon get to the track, I'm just going to sand it and rattle-can-it black, throw some black stomp grip pads on there and call it good. Then this winter, I'll paint the tank the proper Repsol orange and address the frame, assuming I don't like the 'bling.'

Tell him you're going to incorporate an iPod into the frame too and abtech's head will explode.

Hell .... I do better than that. What about a car stereo deck, a back-up camera, a couple of amps and even a flip-put LCD screen.

Main street, here I come. w00t!!

Ah, 929s. I love mine! Awesome street ride, and very capable track ride as well.
