F4i Stock Shock?

I really need a lighter spring for my shock, I can't get enough rear sag even at the lowest pre-load setting and it leads to the back end really being way too stiff. Do they make alternative spring options for the stock shock?

I know that an Ohlins or Penske would be the way to go but I just can't justify it for a bike that I want to replace. I've been watching for a used one but even at $450 I figure a $100 spring would be a better way to go for what I'm doing right now.

I wiegh 150 maybe 160 with the gear and had no issues with the stock shock. have you gone to a suspension guy to set it? I went with Ohlins and even with the proper spring it feels like the shock is twice as stiff! IT is also setup for the track. It is a real pain in the "ass" on long trips.

I weigh 140 and at the lowest setting I can only get 13-15mm of sag. 99% of my riding is on the street at moderate pace. Riding over all of the Iowa bumpy roads has been bruising the heck out of my backside. I had a suspension guy check it out at a track day last summer and he also said that the spring was too stiff for my weight and riding style.

My leathers are already skin tight everywhere but my chest so really the only option that would allow me to gain weight and still fit in to them would be to hit the gym twice a day for about 6 months.

So you already have a plan.

does not fit a med student schedule very well. I need plan B which is a lighter spring.

I'm not really sure you there is a spring light enough for you. thats also my problem and you have me by like 30lbs. The stock shock on my bike I thought was alright and I think I had the preload a click or 2 away from all the way out because I liked it a little stiffer. A suspension guy made a few adjustments to the other settings at a track day and it helped a lot. then I replaced it with a used Ohlins that I think coincidentally had the lightest spring on it already. night and day difference on those shocks. really illustrated how crappy the front was too. So I had the whole front end done and the rear serviced this winter. He put .90 springs in the front which I thought were too hard but he said with my weight there isn't much that can be done but it'll be more controlled now with all the new parts. The other day I was riding over some really shitty roads, whole bike felt better. The bike was following the bumps rather than bumping up over them.

so short of going with the aftermarket shock try adjusting some of the other setting. more rebound damping will keep it from bouncing back up as quickly.

That describes what I'm feeling. I swear sometimes the rear wheel is going airborne over every bump. I've tried reducing compression and adding rebound but that's when I really notice the limitation of the stock shock. As in, it doesn't do much. If I adjust the pre-load up to about the 5th position and then put my wife on it I get a great ride out of it. I realize it is never going to be "cushy" but due to the severe lack of curves here in Iowa and the extreme overabundance of expansion cracks and potholes I really need to do something. If I was spending a lot of time riding at pace in nice twisties the shock would probably be okay but for the type of riding I get on a daily basis it is getting annoying.

10lbs in the trunk? I know adding wieght to a bike is not the ideal solution but it may help in the mean time.

If you do buy a used shock be awair they require service. I bought mine for 300 then 150 for rebuild and 130 for the lighter spring. I think ohlins recommends like a yearly service interval.

Yeah, I've been in contact with TraxxionDynamics and Stig Petterson on rebuilds, respring, etc. and that is what has helped even more in dissuading me from going with a shock right now. If I was planning on having the bike for another three, four years it would be one thing. I'd just like to try putting a lighter spring on it to see if it seems any better to get me through the next year. I really don't see me taking any longer than that to decide on something new.

$95 to service my ohlins from GMD Boston. and yes he said they recommend yearly. said mine didn't need anything really, just changed the oil and nitrogen.

Slick call up those suspension guys and ask if you can just respring the stock shock.

What do guys think about this bit of hype from hyperpro? They have a spring for my bike for $119.

Hyper Pro USA - Catalog

They also have a front spring kit for $169 or you can get both front and rear for $279 with fork oil and installation instructions.

Quote:
Better Road Holding
A rising rate spring means a smooth transition in response to a change in road conditions. Hit a bump and the tire rises quickly at the beginning of the bump then stabilizes and lowers quickly on the back end, all in a fluid motion. This means maximum rubber on the road at all times. In the rain this could be the difference between maintaining traction and sliding. At the track and on the highway this means vastly improved tire wear.
If you race, think about what it means to get ten more laps out of a set of tires. If you ride on the street, think about the money save by buying one less set of tires.

Always a Perfect Setup
The more force you put on a HYPERPRO spring, the greater the resistance. This means a HYPERPRO spring will automatically adjust if you put a passenger on your bike. It will also automatically adjust to your weight. If you weigh 50 kg or 150 kg, a HYPERPRO spring gives you a perfect setup right out of the box. HYPERPRO springs even respond to changes in the amount of fuel in your tank!
