2005 FMX650 with only 220km on the odo when it was procured. I've already had two people offer to buy it and it's not even mine yet. But it sure do look sweet in my garage.

Take that, Honda. You didn't think you could keep this away from me forever, did you?

Because it is cool, and probably does not meet US emission laws.

Re: FMX650

What does it take to get a bike imported? I've been researching it for about a year now because I want to bring in an RVF400 and all I can find is a lot of legal doubletalk and no actual information.

Re: FMX650

There should be no reason NOT to import the FMX650. It's basically just an XR650L with 17" wheels and updated suspension/bodywork. I bet they would sell quite a few of them here. At least the FMX has an electric starter though, the XR650R is kick only

Congrats on an awesome bike

edit: when did you get a cruiser??

Yup, looks like the XRL motor which is like 25 years old and weighs a ton. I cant imagine Honda making it light enough and perform enough to peak the American market. The DRZ400 SM would probaly embaress it. The XR650R is a totaly different animal, but honda has pretty much abandoned it, they are not even running BAJA with it (its intended purpose after the XR600R.) None the less, With KTM and Husky making street legal dirt bikes, I think Honda is missing the boat. As a died in the wool Honda man on Honda dirt bikes since the late 80's...my next dirt bike with a plate will probaly be orange or yellow and blue.

Re: FMX650

Customs really isn't that difficult with bikes as they really don't have many differences. Cars are a whole different monster.

In fact, the headlight glass has DOT stamped on it (as does pretty much every bike in Europe), the tires are Pirellis which also have the DOT stamp molded into it and every street legal bike in Germany that I can think of is a 4 stroke with the same emissions equipment that "49-state" bikes have.

The only thing that has to happen is when it arrives in the states, customs will go over it to ensure everything meets spec. Once it does, it's released for you to pick it up, get it registered and enjoy. If you plan to only keep it off road or on track and not have it registered, they can be a bit more lenient but you won't get any paperwork to show customs has checked it out and won't ever be able to register it.

Side note for the grey market (at least from about 5 years ago) is you can ship vehicles to Canada and then have them sold to you in the US and it doesn't go through the same inspection process. Really don't need to go through all that for a bike though.

I don't know what you mean by a ton but this thing is nice and light. I've heard that this one will carry a 240lb person from 0 to 120kph pretty darn quickly and feels like heaven swapping from hard right to hard left turns at 80kph. These are all assdyno figures though, of course.

Honda abandoned the XR650? That should make those engines pretty cheap. Wonder what it would take to adapt an electric start to it?

Re: FMX650

My brother and his family are living there for six months right now. If he wasn't completely mechanically impaired I'd be having him ship me something. I asked him to look out for an RVF400 but I'm afraid that I might be disappointed with his selection. However, if someone really wanted something shipped over and Seamus is willing to talk me through the paperwork end of it I could probably get something shipped over.

I can point you to what NY wants for registration purposes(NYS DMV - Vehicle Registration and Certificate of Title #2) but each state may have slight differences. The customs paperwork shouldn't change at all though. It's pretty standard paperwork.

Any shipping company that handles the shipping of a vehicle will do all the customs work for you and hand you the paperwork when you pick it up. The only thing you have to do is make sure there are no mods necessary to meet emissions standards. Mods = more money and a delay getting through customs.

I haven't seen a motorcycle yet that required any modifications other than the speedo (kph v mph).

That's awesome Seamus.

Will, RVF400s aren't that tough to find already stateside.

Yeah, they come up here and there but at prices that are not at all realistic. All of them that I have found outside of the states are at prices that even with our crappy exchange rates and shipping I could buy two for the price of one.
