Well, I have been thinking(never a good thing) and if I am going to be putting the 1KRR on the track only next year I am going to need a street ride.
Doesn't need to be brand new as I will not likely be able to afford that, but lets shoot for around 8000-10,000ish and I have to be able to get it in canada or at least get a hand in getting it across the border.
Heres the needs on the bike:
COMFY (#1 now for sure) has to be 929ish or better for the rider and at least that good for passenger.
CHEAP on gas, insurance, maintenence and tires(at least 8000-10,000 Kms on a set of tires).
QUICK (isn't that a given though... really )
HANDLING just so I can stay with some my squid buddies on their 1000's when the road gets twisty
as for the wants
COOL looking and sounding as no matter what I get it will be piped...
CARRY my oxford luggage with out much hassle or have factory available equipment
Decent wind protection
So far I am thinking VFR 98-2001 VFR but they are as rare as hens teeth here gotta be pre-vtec... not keen on the looks of the new ones.
maybe FZ1?
maybe VTR1000(mind you mileage is HORRIBLE on them)
newer generation SV1000
back to a black and silver 929 with some helibars
I like the new triumph sprints but you can't find them here either.
I would love to get an st1300 but, not in the budget...
and I would prefer to stay away from kawasaki... Long story.
am I missing any? I cannot think og a good sports tourer that fits the better part oif the requirments? Gotta be something out there.
My girlfriend says the '99 VFR I had was the most comfortable pillion she has been on. I hear the FZ1 is nice too. Both should be had for well under your budget.
Edit: I forgot to add that the VFR was great for the rider too. My tuono is a better 1-up all round streetbike than the VFR, but add in a passenger and the VFR wins.
I'd love to have another VFR but the more I think about it, the more I think I'd have more fun on a dual-purpose thumper. (and get in less trouble) KLR, KTM, or XR650

But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government.
I really do have a soft spot for the viffers(ever since I got buzzed by one in my car. he had a wolf pipe and was doing well over the limit.) sounds like a muscle car...
I saw trauma's bike for sale. I have been thinking about one of those for a while now, but again they are rare up here. I really don't know what is involved in brining a bike back across the border? taxes dutys etc etc... Heck of a good deal though. Mind you our dollar is not 91 cents US anymore either .
The tuono would be awesome, but again, there are next to NONE of them here, and NO dealers anywhere.
I have pondered the sv's and think that if I was going to pull the trigger I would have to get the 1000 as I do(or at least plan to do) a lot more 2-up and the extra grunt is nice. the g/f hates when I tap 3 gears and "pass"...
I don't know if I am ready for a "cruiser" yet, mind you I was practiaclly raised on one and they are pretty cheap and abundant.
as for the supermoto's...I wish... I would be in jail in a minute. plus I have heard that they are not that great on the "slab" which is basically what I have to deal with around here... I would in a minute though if I could use it "properly" around here.
Goldwing is a little out of budget for now(but one can dream right)
and the gs adventure... well I will have to look in to that one...
Hammer and bwhip want you to be arrested! I know that bike would put me behind bars!
You could get an 06 FZ-1 used in your price range. Or the older ones are pretty cool too.
Better yet, how about a Honda CBR1100XX Blackbird? I don't know how hard they are to come by up there.
I bought one about a year and a half ago. My sister has it now, and I still struggle with buying it back. (It is for sale, btw. )
That bike is comfortable, a little long in the reach to the bars, but they are high. With a Corbin seat and backrest it is an awesome two up bike. If it were not for some health issues I would have probably bought it back instead of getting the FJR.
Did I mention it's fast? Not quite Busa, but better than most. AND it's a Honda!

Also, If you are thinking of Helibars, check out Convertibars, too. I have had them both and much prefer the Converts.

After viewing that I think I would probably be OK. I could handle it, I wouldn't get into trouble...
You know, I used to think whip was a nice guy, he looks so benign in the photo's.
Does he sell crack at the local grade school?

Well first you have to pay the shipping, or at least pay your flight there and trip back. You'll have to give the border 24 hours notice, get set up with a customs broker, pay duty, GST and PST. Price has to be pretty cheap for it to be worthwhile.
...But not all cheap things are worthwhile.

You can get a used FZ1 (01-05) pretty cheap, look for one with suspension upgrades and a jet kit and you're good to go. Or if you want more comfort how about a used FJR? They have stock hard bags so your s/o can easily bring all her crap along!
Sv is looking good, but I am affraid that it would have to be one heck of a deal for me to buy south of the border.
If I am crossing to pick something up it will be something "cool" that I cannot get over here IE aprillia or the likes.
I have REALLY been thinking about buying another 929, I kinda miss my old girl and with a set of heli-bars I would be able to ride all day again...maybe?
I wondered about the FJR but again insurance and tires would get me I think. Besides if I was to go that route I would likely fork out the cash for a new ST 1300
