Upgraded the garage

I finally got tired of the noise of the small 2hp no oil compressor in the garage. I was also tired of waiting for it to recover from using the air tools in the garage. So I did some trading with a guy from work to get a bigger compressor, but with only a one car garage I did not have room for it in there and the noise would be pretty bad as well. My solution, put it where I could not hear it, in the shed out back. It was a job in itself to get it all hooked up, but will be nice when I am doing work in there. The compressor itself it a 6.5hp 60 gallon compressor, I also ran about 100ft of 1" PVC from the shed to the garage. i also put in a 35 gallon surge tank inside the garage to give me more capacity. I estimated I have over a 100 gallon capacity which should be plenty for a shade tree mechanic. I had a neighbor redo the wiring in the shed to get 220v out to it, I also installed a box to disconnect power in the event that I needed to work on it without getting shocked and used an A/C disconnect box to do this. No belt sanded was used in this project though, but I did have to rent a Big Hammer drill to get the air line through the bricks. As you will see I also upgraded my tool box too. I was working out of 4 craftsman boxes in the garage which did not have enough room for 1/2 of my tools. In the deal I traded for a Snap on box, it is used but is still in good condition and better quality than the craftsman boxes i had. Not that that is taken care of I can get rolling on some bike projects I have in line.

Yep, used it in many applications for air. Good to 450lbs and does not leak when put together correctly. Actually my only leak I had was a metal line threads on the bottom of the surge tank.

Looks good except the wrenches not in increasing size increments. Organizing wrenches should be done like FrenchieR6's fridge...

Look again, the ones on the left are sets and the ones on the right are spare backups.

I have yet to see her twist a wrench herself. I went to help her at her first race, she needed tires changed. I asked her where her tools were, she handed me a set in a plastic case. You know the ones with a 3/8 ratchet and the 1/4 reducer in there with it and about 12 sockets and a reversible screwdriver. All made in Taiwan. I knew I was in trouble right then.

Re: Upgraded the garage

I had that same compressor. It's great. My dad and I got about 12 years of solid use out of ours, and that was with it being in 2 floods, one in which it got knocked over. Gave it to a friend when my dad opened up his speed shop and we needed to clean up the garage at home. It ran for my buddy for a few more years till the rod let go in the compressor. He got a rebuild kit for it and he still has it working till this day. It's going on 16 years now with hardly any maintenance.

Nice setup.

I hope this one lasts as long, it is used but still in good shape.

Re: Upgraded the garage

Good show, A bit jealous here.

I'm still on a "cute" crapsman roll away and compressor until I get my own garage that is big enough to house the nice stuff. Can't wait to have a real compressor out in a shed.

Re: Upgraded the garage

My one planned garage upgrade for the year is a compressor. I have some pretty good air tools but don't have a compressor now that I'm away from home. I won't be getting a 6.5hp 60 gallon though.

Re: Upgraded the garage

I've got this one: http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00916734000P?sbf=Brand&sbv=Craftsman &vName=Tools&cName=Compressors+%26+Air+Tools&sName =Air+Compressors+%26+Inflators

For the amount of air tools I use, it works fine.

I have that same one (an older version) and for small stuff it works fine. I have the next size up from Hammer's and it does just about everything I have thrown at it. It gets quite a bit of use as a cleanup blower for client systems. You wouldn't believe the crap that gets into just about every workstation or server I have every worked on. Cranking my non-OSHA approved air nozzle WFO with about 120 PSI behind it works just fine for getting out those pesky dust bunnies .

That is about the same one I had except for that one has a larger tank. I do some body work, when I crash the bike......So I do not need it all the time but it is nice when I do need it. It is still an oil-less compressor so it will be a bit noisy. I will keep mine but it will stay in the trailer for air at the track, it will run off of the generator.

Very nice. I *badly* need to do something similar. I have the same noisy oiless compressor you had. It actually reduces my 2 year old to tears when it kicks on.
