Shield your eyes when you walk into my garage

Finally pulled the trigger and bought my own MIG welding setup. (Millermatic180, 230V for those who are wondering) Just picked it up today. Going to finish setting it up this weekend and hopefully, start testing the settings.

First project, weld the kids in their rooms and just relax with the wife.

Between the belt sander and the welder, we should be able to fix anything.

Re: Shield your eyes when you walk into my garage

Miller makes a damn fine welding machine. It's pretty much the only brand of welder we use up here at the college I go to. I'll vouch for the miller Big Window Elite welding helmets too. Expensive but worth every penny. the automatic tinted lens works without a problem and the paintjob on them holds up really well.

Nice. My roomie has had one for a while... it might have been the first thing he bought when he moved in.

It has come in handy more than a few times.

Re: Shield your eyes when you walk into my garage

I never thought it would be so damn hard to get scrap yards to give up some metal to play with. You'd think I'd asked them to split their profits with me. It's not like they won't get it back shortly afterwards. They'll even gain a pound or two in the process.

scrap is hard to come by, at least for free anyway. your best bet is to hit up a bodyshop and ask them for some old bits and pieces

Few options...

-1- Tell them you are writing an article about the short term effects of alkali subheterodynamic properties in degrees kelvin below sea level, and you were hoping to use their name in the article.

-2- Call the local Chevy dealer, they have huge piles of scrap out front every time I drive by.

What are all you welders using for welding helmets?
I am looking at getting an auto darkening.

Ended up finding a bunch at the Post Recycling Point. Not only did they just point and say "whatever you want", but one of the dining facilities just finished a refurb. There is stainless sheet all over the place. Scratch free and FREE.

After getting used to the settings, I drew up some plans for a welding table to get myself off my garage floor. Spent all last weekend welding up the frame (spent this week in Jackson, MS wishing I was home finishing the job). Have to hit the metal supply place when I get back for some 3/8" plate to finish it off next week. I'll post some pics of the progress when I get home.

Picked up two. One at each entrance/exit.

-1- I'll need a translator.
-2- I'm waiting for Z to finally give up on the Focus. After he finally shoves it off a cliff, I should be able to scrape something up.

I currently have an Optiva that I bought last year at the local welding supply place. Auto darkening, adjustable shade for $85. I plan on upgrading to the Miller Elite this year (b'day request).

Check out WeldingWeb™ - Professional Welding Forum - Powered by vBulletin. There's ton's of info there. It's where I hang out when I'm not here. Check out the projects and pics section. Outfugginstanding works of welding.

If you're looking to learn, check out zapster's posts. That dude has some SERIOUS talent.

He reminds me of BDA. Serious talent and knowledge wrapped in attitude. Love you B.

Be careful, once I learned a little bit about welding from my classes over the last year, I haven't been able to stop myself from analyzing every weld I find.
