Generator-How many watts is enough?

OK so I will be in the market this spring and am wondering what is enough. My main objective is tire warmers and while it may get other use power at home is uber reliable with no weather that is to cold to do without climate control.

So how many watts? Anyone got one that wishes they had more?

I would imagine 65 KW ought to handle it.

Re: Generator-How many watts is enough?

Warmers are give or take 1.5 kW, which is why the Honda 2000 are so popular. They'll run a laptop, fan and warmers just fine.

If you want to run stuff at home, look up your refrigerators and stuff.

Re: Generator-How many watts is enough?

I have a 5500 watt. It powers a fridge, 1800 btu wall A/C unit and a 220 volt well pump. Plus a lamp or 2 and a TV. Barely.
I will eventually get a bigger one for home power, quieter too!

Re: Generator-How many watts is enough?

That's what I have (5500W contractor's special). It will do two fridges, my total fishtank system, and a light. Lousy power conditioning though, something to watch if you want to hook sensitive electronics to it. It burns ~10 gals a day when running non-stop.

Noisy sumbitch...but extremely handy.

Re: Generator-How many watts is enough?

I was asking this myself the other day....damn voices. Anyway, I was looking at tire warmers on e-bay, and it seems most of them run on average about 700 watts and lower. I managed to get a 1000w generator at Meijer on black Friday for $100! Good enough for me!

Re: Generator-How many watts is enough?

It was REAL hard resisting getting the maximum power. But I got a generator.

The Honda and Yamaha 3000 were tempting but I think this will get me going, if not I can link two of them for 4000

Not at all. I'll bet those tire warmers will work just fine with a 65KW source . . .

Cute sheep...your generator is powered by rubbing the wool over the plastic case and generating static electricity?

Re: Generator-How many watts is enough?

I have a 5000 watt portable. I have had the thing for about 10 years now and it still runs great.

My Father-in-Law gave it to me. It says it's a Coleman, but it has a noisy Briggs and Stratton engine.

5000 watts has never let me down. I have no idea what it would power in the home though. Under my rear deck resides a HUGE Kohler similar to Abtech's.

As long as I can get diesel and gasoline I can keep power independantly of any power company.

Re: Generator-How many watts is enough?

Are all generators designed to be used outside? I am looking to pick something up that will serve as back up for my sump pump. Somewhere in the neighborhood of 10-15 amps I think? Than someday if I decide to try tire warmers (probably won't).

Re: Generator-How many watts is enough?

They are gas powered so yep However are they weather resistant... Mine would be so-so but for use in the rain I would want a cover of some sort over it to deflect rain from the gas cap vent.

Re: Generator-How many watts is enough?

How much power..... "1.21 jiga-watts!"

"What's a Jiga-Watt?".... name the movie

In the Carny days we dealt with 1200 KW generators with 12 cylinder Cat Diesels.

I have a 6000 watt generator, that my friend Hammer helped me get home for 200 bucks... from a CCS event!

I had a power outage, What I did is I made a Jumper from the 220 out of the generator to the Air-Conditioning Throw-Out, and turned off the main at the breaker box.

Drove a 15 foot Copper Grounding Rod in the ground next to the air unit, and ran it by my air unit.

Just watched the other houses from time to time to see when their light went back on.

I had to balance the load in the breaker box a little better then what was there. But it works well.

Runs everything, as long as we are careful of how many lights and etc...

Couple times it got a little hard running when we had the freezer cycling, the 220 well pump running, and a TV on.

But it works well... about 6-7 hours with us running that big of a load..... it went like that for almost 48 hours.

Just make sure... which I did, but one of my buddies did not.

Unhook everything from the generator, put the throw back in on the air handler, then turn on the main at the box.

Let's just say the friend down the street did not... He had a little bit of a show.

StickboyRacing.com

I bought the 2600. Shipping was $75 bucks. It's pretty quiet too considering that it's not a Honda*.

*Also half the price.
