Experience with Oxygenated Fuel?

Anyone have any experience with oxygenated fuel? I've heard VP sells a sanctioning-body-legal blend that's good for ~4% power.

There's gotta be a Southeast Michigan distributor for this stuff - Any leads?

Re: Experience with Oxygenated Fuel?

Sure, works great. Do you need it to be legal?

The legal stuff costs more than the non-AMA legal stuff.

The Fowlerville Sunoco (exit 129 on I-96) is a VP dealer and usually stocks U4 (very good stuff!). I would call ahead if you're heading to Grattan and pick it up on the way.

I usually keep 2 gallons of VP leaded 112 and when the bike will be sitting for more than a couple of weeks, put in about 2 units and run the bike through a full heat cycle. I have never had any problem with the fuel pump/hoses/gaskets/TBs using this technique.

Fantastic - Comes in 5 gallon cans, I assume?

Thanks also for the info on the system flush requirement.

Do you recommend getting the motor mapped with U4, or do you just tweak the fuel flow up a bit with jetting or a Powercommander?

They have it in bulk and usually just fill up whatever I bring in (usually 5 gallon jugs). If you want to buy it containerized, you need to call ahead. I think they sell 5 gallon units, but they usually cost more per gallon than 15 or 55 gallon units.

I have used both methods and obviously mapping works best, especially if you are going to swap fuels. I have never used anything but U4 on my current bike, so I just got it mapped once I had it together. Many riders get it mapped with pump gas and then for the U4 and just download the appropriate map for the fuel they are using.

It usually adds around 5 HP without any mapping on a liter bike. Forget the carcinogenic effect, I'm working with Christian Dior on a line of cologne products based on U4/MR9. Women may not like it, but all the guys will know "you're the man" . . .

That's not oxygenated.

U4 has been discontinued. It's been replaced with U4.1. Totally different fuels. U4 and pump gas could be interchanged, and apparently a U4.1 map can't be run with pump gas with out serious problems.

Pump gas is generally oxygenated. It's the oxygenates in some racing fuels that are problematic. VP is one, Nutec is another.

I'd run a gallon of a fair leaded 110 or 112 octane fuel with four gallons of pump gas. The lead can increase the uniformity of the flame burn while the pump gas maintains a great flame speed and a decent amount of oxygenate.

What are you running the fuel in?

I just received 15 gallons of U4 from the Michigan distributor. He says it's still available on pre order. U4 is oxygenated, the VP 112 is what I use to keep the U4 from eating the diaphragms etc. during storage. I'm running it in my RC. U4 is already leaded (as is U4.1).

U4.1 doesn't require flushing and is formulated to not be harmful to internals during storage.
