On that subject DUX, I had a friend whose son was painting his race car in the garage with a wood stove. (sealed unit) Long story short his daughter found him sizzling in the snow bank outside of the garage already dead. Being an automotive painter I've been guilty several several times of painting small stuff with a similar heating set up to what you are thinking of using. Never knew how many parts pr million it took before talking to the osha guy..just took it for granted it would be ok. So if you do stuff like that, even rattle can enamal, know it is possible.
Alway wondered about that. I get nervous painting in my garage without a heater running.
Good thread. I am suffering 40 to 50 degrees out in my garage right now. I am going to look at craiglist for a natural gas unit as I am plumbed out there. I may just do a propane tank heater if I cant locate one.

We had our first frost over the weekend and it's been clear and cold up here too.
I wussed out and left the cack from the SoCal adventure on the Bimmer for now.
I need to get something too.

A good friend of mine pays me rediculous money to fix scooters. Unfortunately it always takes more time than anticipated. This time around its a full assembly and rewire on a late 50s Vespa. Transplanted a 80's engine, battery and rectifier, converted a late 50s tail light to 12v led, and ran HID lighting. Ran a cylinder head temp and exhaust gas temp senders. Plumbed vaccuum for a fuel tap and fuel pump. Extended fork for conversion from 8 inch to 10 inch tires. Month and a half and 85% done while trying to not freeze my a55 off.
Found a wall heater on craigslist. Will be checking it out tonight. I really should buy the propane tank heater in the interim.

Btw, over the weekend I got tired of roasting or freezing while at the same time going deaf, so I picked up one of the trash can style convection heaters for the garage. With the constant storms were having here I don't forsee the usual glut of them I would already, so I just bought it now.
Anyways, it works pretty well. It doesent reek of propane fumes in the garage as much now, and it's a more calm heat Meaning you can still hear the radio, a phone ring, etc. Even with it running
It might take a little while longer to build up the temp than my jet type but I just start it on low and leave it for am hour or so.
I should also add in the last year I added a 30gal flamable materials cabinet to the garage, and keep all the good stuff in there. I also move my scroll fan outside and have it blowing in rather than the inverse. It's pretty cozy in there now, the heat seems to accumulate better with this unit for some reason.

The Seamii are awesome.
I have used the forced air propane tanks units (35K BTUs) to heat the garage with a couple of uncomfortable side effects.
1. It dries the air very quickly making your eyes burn a bit.
2. It removes oxygen (duh combustion)
3. Must keep it away from flamable vapors and 18 inchs off the floor. Code locally to keep open flame away from gasoline vapors.
4. You should see what the ozone effect does to your bike tires. I had a solid blue ring around the side facing the heater. And it was 20 ft away.
Not a rocket scientist but a few thoughts to ponder.
On the pro side it warms up even an insolated garage rather quickly and is extremely portable and cheap to purchase. I just swap tanks between it and the grill for seasonal reasons.
Picked up a slightly used wall furnace off craigslist last night. Next is to run black pipe up the wall across the rafters and back down the wall to this heater. A attic fan and a heater vent are the future mods for the roof. The wife says its just so I can smoke my cigars in comfort. Yeh nevermind the fridge, pool table, dartboard and couch. Man lair getting warmed up soon!

Got a link to the type of heater? Now that it's above single digits, I have a chance to heat the garage and get some things done out there. I have one of those Mr. Heaters. It works, but, yeah, it's noisy. I also periodically have trouble keeping it lit. Once I let go of the red starter button, the flame goes out. It's only been used a few times, too.

Nice, maybe someday. The gas pipe for the stove in the kitchen...hmm... would be a straight shot to tap off of it out into the garage, but it's not close...have to go through a breezeway, the old 2 car garage, then out into the addition.

Something like this, though mine is the "30-70,000 BTU" model. Just keep in mind, this thing is a bit hungrier than most, and if it's breezy - it will convect itself all the way out of your garage . If you buy the 80+k BTU model's, they recommend a tank larger than 20gallons.
On the 70k setting, it's basically like holding a torch in the middle of your garage, but on the lower settings it's much quieter and waaay more tolerable of a combusion noise than the rattly jet heaters.
p.s. If your holding in the red button for ignite, how long you holding for? As thermocouples age they sometimes like to part ways with conductivity...could be a simple fix or even a bending of the device to make sure it has a prong in your heat flow.
p.p.s. It was 13 degrees here today and I was glad I still had mr 125k btu noisy propane heater. Granted it blasted through 1/4 20# tank ofpropane in about an hour, but damn - it got my garage from 40 to 73 in about 25 minutes.

Thanks for the link! I'm holding in the button for however many seconds it says to on the side, 15 I think? I find if I fiddle with it and hold for less, I can get it to say lit. It's not that old, a few years perhaps, and I've used it maybe half a dozen times. There's something inside I can bend? I don't want to make it worse! I got it from Northern Tool. Who would fix something like this?

Im not sure who might fix something like that, hmm...I would? Just send it to me, even if the postage costs about what a new one would
Actually Im not sure who would fix it, maybe the rental center at your local HD might have an idea - they rent them, so they must have to fix them too
..if you lived closer! I'll take a look at it and check around...
