depo,

you can get a controller that will do the switching for you. They are UL listed and certified and you won't have to worry about issues later on with your utility/whoever...

....and is required by your utility, no matter what a retired lineman's hairdresser says...

You can probably read the requirements right on your utility's website. Most likely they will reference NEC Article 702-6....

Depo I can help you, my house is already properly wired to code for a generator, I've got the secondary transfer panel to prove it! So to prevent danger to yourself or linemen, you can donate your generator to me and I'll keep it safe until your wiring project is complete...no rush on that btw, I have plenty of room

I cam say from a utility perspective, if we hear a generator running we will check to see that the main is shut off and if it is it is ok with us. Plus we have the line grounded for just such occasions. If the generator is wired wrong, it will overload the generator anyhow.

Well I looked in to it.....

While trying not to be a jerk..... The Code only states Permanent Stand-By Generators are required to have transfer switches...

Since I roll my generator out and roll it back in.....

I recognize people's safety and that doing things correctly are important... I will throw a transfer switch on the box and have inspected by an electrician.

I would suspect that by checking the continuity between the north and south sides of the 200 AMP main the lineman would be clear of any danger.... the two times I have used the generator this way.... when the power came back on... It did not torch my generator or trip it, so it is not backfeeding. I maybe dumb, but I am not stupid.

But to be double dog sure on this... transfer switch it will be.

Now if only the company can fix the drop offs to 100 volts that I get on a regular basis.... and not just me, but my neighbor, which I guess would probably means my whole subdivision. Not that I have only called them about 20 times on this.

You need "Earl" to check it out 4 u? He is cheap!!!!!

Seriously, there are many reasons the drop can be happening. Even be simple as as loose connection. If I remember you have underground service?..............How old is the subdivision? Have you checked the connections on your side of the box?
