Cool! I usually use WD40, but I also have some Motul Chain Cleaner. Wonder how that does...one would think it's fine...

Someone mentioned my question on page 3. Isn't the duration of exposure longer when soaked then if merely introduced and wiped off or left to dry?

I thought that the harm WD40 did was remove the Grease in-between the O-wrings / X-wrings.

I use Kerosene, Wash the bike, ride for 10 min and put on the wax!

I'm sure there in an inuendo or two in there, but I'm not touching it

I would think the evaporative process might be more destructive because that would be when oxidation and "drying" of the rubber can occur, but that is just a guess.

How can you be really sure you wiped it all off?

I was thinking more of duration and extent of exposure. You don't ride with WD40 et al constantly coating your chain so soaking them in the liquids isn't quite realistic.

If your o-ring is expanded 29%, then any lube inside of it is going to have a higher likelihood of falling out, thereupon negating the intended purpose.

Well I guess we found the guy that doesen't have a scottoiler*.

* - which is ok, because until they come out with a scott-graveler to go along with it, the point is entirely lost.

I have one, but oiling my rear tire is only good for those smokey burnouts at Hooters Bike Nights.

wd40

WD-40's main ingredients, according to U.S. Material Safety Data Sheet information, are:The German version of the mandatory EU safety sheet lists the following safety relevant ingredients:It further lists flammability and effects to the human skin when repeatedly exposed to WD-40 as risks when using WD-40. Nitrile rubber gloves and safety glasses should be used. Water is unsuitable for extinguishing burning WD-40.
There is a popular urban legend that the main ingredient in WD-40 is fish oil.[2] Although it is unknown whether the formula contains fish oil, material safety data sheets for the product show that the main ingredient is Stoddard solvent, not fish oil.[3]

Uses mentioned:
The WD-40 company claims it is safe for use on all motorcycle chains, but recommended cleaning products vary among chain manufacturers. Tsubaki Chain[4] and RK Chain recommend WD-40 to clean or displace water on all types of chains, including sealed ring.[5]
