Garage Floor Coatings...

Epoxy? Tile? Astroturf? Granite? ...but seriously, whats out there that you folks have used that works? I am currently using poured cement...it seems to work better then the grass and gravel combination I have used in the past. But I'd like to get something a little nicer to get it some protection.

Bring it on...

Re: Garage Floor Coatings...

I used the Rust O leum epoxy. Recommendation is to clear it as well. IF there is a next house it is getting the top of the line U-coat IT with the clear on top. The new Rust O leum allows you to choose more colors which is an option I didn't have.

Re: Garage Floor Coatings...

I used a 2 part kit from Sherwin-Williams called Seal-Crete. It worked ok, but even though we kept it mixed while applying, there was color variation, at least with the pewter color used. We didn't sprinkle in the deco flakes. They probably would have hidden the color difference. Prep was easy, since it was a new floor. I also put down some of those big rubber type mats where the kickstands will be.

On my old garage floor with 50 years' worth of oil soaked in, I'm just going to put down the rubber type mats, as they're cheaper than Race Deck. I can't be bothered trying to prep that old floor.

Re: Garage Floor Coatings...

I got the Rustoleum industrial floor epoxy coating in mine. The kits are roughly twice what the garage floor kits sell for, so I hope it was worth it. We've been in the house for about 1.5 yrs, and there's plenty of salt from the vehicles that sits on it all winter long. Last spring I used a pressure washer and the floor looked like new again. So far, no problems other than the kits don't go as far as they say they do in the instructions on new concrete. I was amazed at just how much soaked into the floor (which I guess is a good thing) so it left a dull finish in some areas. I bought another kit (on top of the four kits it took to coat the floor the first time) and put a second coat in the shop area. So far there's been no separation between the coats, either.

Re: Garage Floor Coatings...

I used the Rustoleum garage epoxy flooring in my toy room (about half the size of a standard garage).

It's this stuff here:
Rust-Oleum Brands - Stopping Rust is Just the Start

I also sprinkled the little flakes around as they suggest. Overall, I'm pretty pleased with it, although I've noticed that in a couple of spots, the sidestand from my DR-Z has scraped the paint off, so a couple of coats would have probably been better.

I may use the same or similar product for my trailer floor and ramp. It looks good, gives good traction, and would be much lighter than putting in vinyl floor tile or something like that in my trailer.

Re: Garage Floor Coatings...

Cool, I had seen that Rust-Oleum stuff around but wasn't sure how decent it was, sounds like it or it's industrial brother may work out well

So next question...did you buy it online or at a store? how much should I be planning on earmarking for this little venture?

Concrete in my garage is <3 years old, and doesen't appear to have anything in it other then a settling crack. Figure once I am moved in, maybe a little later this year I will pull everything out and do it up right. Hate to see that new concrete with my oilstains all over it.

Also saw some 8x10(?) rubber garage mat @ Costco for 129$ that looked like it may be a good temp covering till then.

I just bought it at Lowe's (seen it at Home Depot as well). I think the kit, which is supposed to cover a 10' x 20' area, went for about $60.00. It includes concrete etching material (to prep the base concrete), paint, chips, and an instructional DVD.

Re: Garage Floor Coatings...

I did the epoxy floor six years ago when my garage was built. I used four kits on a 600 sq.ft. floor, and its still looking great! I didn't use the flakes, because if you drop something small, you play hell finding it...

Keep it clean and it will last a long time; don't let the tire grit wear it down.

If it did, I could just leave the instructional DVD in the garage and it would kick the ass of any cement that attempted to desert the common floor, or oil that attempted to permeate it. Thos rust oleum guys can't be that dumb, everyone would just buy the CD!

Nice, did you do the color or the clear?

I am thinking a solid battleship gray, but at the same time - Red would be nice.

From what I can tell, it has to be free of oils and any contaminants. If an oil based paint won't 'take' well to the surface for a few months, then this stuff probably wont either. Same can be said if you have concrete that is very moist or a high water table I guess...the adherence goes out the window with anything other then ideal fresh concrete.

However, that is just the mfr's disclaimer and stuff...Im sure alot of people buy this sort of stuff to do their old garages with. I imagine a bit of TSP and TCB and you'll be fine.

the floor in my garage is old and at one time looked like it had a massive spill. damn and the way the land is graded, it stays a little damp, i guess i am just out of luck.

Good luck with that. You're probably better off asking another customer.

I should clarify..by 'person' I meant whoever is in the stall next to me. Though most of the time people are hesitant to talk in the shitter, well I am too. So I lie in wait (door locked, feet up of course) and wait till I hear sounds of the pond next door to me getting stocked, and then scream ARGGGGGGHHH at the top of my lungs while slamming my feet on the ground and pounding the stall (just one big thud) wall as hard as I can followed by a grunt. I then say nothing for two-three seconds enjoying the silence, then politely ask "do you know where the floorcoverings are?". Honesty is the best policy.
