Chain cleaning

Just wondering what people use to clean thier chains.

I usually use the Moto shop spray but was interested.

Also what type of lube your using. I recently switched to wax.

I did try super green spray on the regular lube on the advice of a Cyclest and found it worked pretty well, but not so well on the wax.

WD-40 to clean.

Wax on streetbikes.

Little gas with automatic transmission fluid in it to clean, and a coat of chain wax.

Have not cleaned it yet, but I think it's time there's a lot of guck. I'm not real happy with the chain wax I have.

The last bike I did this on was my 929. I used gasoline and an old toothbrush.

Or did I use laquer thinner? Was it paint thinner? Fumes!! I remember that!

WD40 to clean and this is mostly what I do. If I'm down to weekend riding, I'll wipe it down (spray WD on a rag and wipe down, wipe excess off) after every ride. Every 500-1000 miles I will follow up with some Silkolene chain lube and let it sit overnight.

Both cleaner and lube from the expensive cans. Use wax for the lube. Clean the chain when it no longer looks gold.

Oh, use the GRUNDGE BRUSH as well. Most awesome piece of equipment in the arsenal.

WD (kerosene in a can) because it is more convenient, but Kerosene when I have it around and not being too lazy. I'm trying one of the Honda spray lubes (with white lithium if I remember) and like it so far. Lube usually lasts me a long time because I put it on so rarely.

I have heard that WD-40 can damage your O rings (but I see some people here would beg to differ ). I use Simple Green with some shop rags and an old toothbrush. The grunge brush is good, but I was too cheap to purchase one .

For lubing I use:

I make up a secret mixture to clean that I learnt from my old boss at the bike shop I used to work at. (If I told you what it was, I'd have to kill you ) Then I lube the old fashioned way with good old engine oil, wipe off any excess dribbles, and let it sit over night. Cheap, and works wonders. Also engine oil has the distinct advantage of not being sticky. You have to lube a little more often, but it attracts virtually no nasty hard stony dusty stuff, and keeps the chain and sprockets in good shape for longer.

Maybe the Simple Green formula has changed over the years, but I know it did some nasty things to plastic when it first came out. I experienced the brittle cracking as did many other, and the Honda rep seemed to think it was a familiar tune. I also know it would soften the paint on my rear wheel.

I'd me much more afraid of using SG than WD any day.

Point taken. I take extra caution to only spray it on the chain directly without getting it on any painted surfaces, scrubbing with the brush and wiping with the rags. Only about 8" at a time so, it takes a little time, but soon it is clean as a wistle...and it smells good too!!!. Once everything is clean, I wipe it down one more time to get every drop off (well almost )
