A boy and his first air compressor.

Ahhh, today's a big day. My garage just got more capable.

Craftsman 1 hp. 12 gal. Portable Air Compressor - Model 16640 at Sears.com

My wife asked if we needed this, and I looked at her VERY inquisitively.

Re: A boy and his first air compressor.

Build a box for it and insulate it. They are a nice addition to the home garage, but they are noisy. Congrats.

Re: A boy and his first air compressor.

Sweet, I shopped compressors yesterday. Haven't been able to pick one up yet. To run my impact wrench I'm supposed to have 4.0 SCFM @90 and they get spendy at that kind of output. I always had dad's or grandpa's and now that I'm away from home I need one. I was at Sears today and picked up a 20pc screwdriver set with Christmas money from my grandma. That was one area of my tools that really needed an upgrade.

It must use oil in the compressor then. The oil less compressors are usually noisy, atleast the ones I have seen.

30-Gallon Vertical Cast Iron Air Compressor

I believe last week Lowes had this model on special for $299

The rating is if you are going to use the tool constantly, if it is for occasional use any of them would be fine. You will just have a lag time in waiting for the tank to recover full pressure again before resuming your work.

I bought a Sears 80th anniversary upright similar to yours HD, just a bit bigger. Works pretty well, but noisy as the hounds of hell. I haven't run it out of air with my impact or ratchet @ 90PSI, but my die grinder will kill it pretty quick.

Make sure you put a filter/water separator on it.

Yeah, I know, but I've used it with small compressors and it sure doesn't do to well. The wrench itself calls for that much air for it to have full capability.

Is there an advantage or disadvantage to an oil filled compressor? I know that the oil filled are quieter, is that the way I want to go, or is there another disadvantage that comes with the oil filled models? After looking at them yesterday I realized that I wanted to ask you guys before I made a purchase. What do you think of the Harbor Freight compressors? They have a 2hp, approx. 15 gal, I think, that puts out 4.0 SCFM @90psi for about $130. It is oil filled. I know it isn't exactly a Kobalt or Craftsman but will it last a few years?

I went with one of the oilless ones for size and weight.

When I buy a house, I'll buy a big upright and build a shed for it.

I noticed the oil compressors normally have a lower peak PSI. With my car tinkering I want at least 150PSI capability for when I need to turn up a gun to bust a bolt loose. 175 would be better.

The oil less compressors will do fine for a "Shade tree Mechanic". The main gripe with them is the noise they produce. Other than that they are ok for what they do.

The oil compressors are built heaver and will last longer with more run time on them. And are quieter.

Before I got my big compressor I had a small 2hp 10 gallon compressor and it did the job, I just hated waiting on the tank to recover especially when painting.

Re: A boy and his first air compressor.

Mine is a 2 stage 38 gallon vertical with a wet sump. It is about 1/4 as loud as my small portable 2 horse Craftsman (looks like HDs, except horizontal). You can hear it, but it's only a bit louder than my furnace . . .

It puts out 160 PSI and has great recovery times when using it continuously. I can get the same drive unit with a 125 gallon tank which would definitely be overkill for my requirements.

Ah yes.

But the very coolest air compressors are quiet...I use hearing protection with mine or the ears are ringing.

I use my flight line "ear muffs" when I'm working near it just in case it kicks on. That f**ker is loud as f**k. And that's the compressor, not the wife. There is no hearing protection that can help that.

Congrats on the addition to your garage, HD. It's always a good feeling to add to the stable or toolbox. Now you have to post the in house pics...

I haven't decided where it's going to live yet. The garage is a mess, and packed w/ cars for the winter. The bike is in the basement so the compressor may go down there for the winter.

Re: A boy and his first air compressor.

I have a 32 gallon Craftsman oilless from Sears that is loud enough to wake the dead. If anyone is in the marked for a quiter compresser, I just bought onf for my dad for christmas. A Dewalt from Home Depot, 15 or so gallon upright, oilless, 200 psi, and its 78 decibles. I cant believe how quiet it is.

Just add an external AC compressor (at least 5+ HP or so with 3 or more tons of refrigeration ought to suffice) to cool it down. Believe me, you'll never hear your air compressor again .
