Have you tried not speeding?
...They say speed kills.

Speed is not killing.... he is laid up healing on the couch watching the SBW forum.
We are talking Los Angeles Freeways. No one is going 55 or 65. I have already made my contribution to the revenue generating system in place. |

guy at work said that to me the other day. my response: "its not the speed that kills, its the impact" best way to avoid getting pulled over for speeding is to look at your speedometer.

Re: Best Radar and Laser detector
I haven't used a detector for more than 10 years. I had the latest, greatest unit in my SHO, and got popped rolling downhill, trying to clean coffee off my seat at 39 miles per hour in a 25.. within sight of a 35 mile per hour sign.
The policeman (who was hiding in a driveway with instant-on laser) said that he would never give a break of even a single mile-per-hour to anyone with a detector so I just threw it away after that. I beat most of the egregious penalty with a letter to the magistrate. So, not to pile on, but in lieu of not speeding, always make sure there's someone around with a good radar signature going faster than you..

Re: Best Radar and Laser detector
By the way, do what I do... if I get pulled over..... as I lean to get my paper work I yank the radar detector and put it in the glove box. The joy of the tinted windows.

when you see the lights come on behind you, you have plenty of time to yank the thing off the window.

Valentine.
That being said, it will do nothing for laser.

Re: Best Radar and Laser detector
Anybody that thinks laser detectors are worth anything are fooling themselves. You hear the beep you are being calculated. It is such a narrow beam that detectors can not pick it up until you are right on it.

![]() My driving instructor always told me that you couldn't increase your speed until you'd passed the sign. Think about it... just being able to see the sign isn't measurable or consistent. Maybe I can see farther than you. ...but I can't see the future.

Re: Best Radar and Laser detector
There was an article a few years back stating that the best defense against laser radars were laser absorbent paint on headlights and license plate. The LIDAR system as I recall works best when trained on bright reflection bits - usually headlights and plates. That's why motorcycles actually are easier to catch than cars simply b/c most of our frontal area is a headlight (929 -- ugh).
The absorbant paint doesn't put you into stealth mode. It merely lessens the sensitivity of the LIDAR beam back. So you get a couple more hundred feet of grace - thereby hoping you can spot the cop before it can spot you. It works - there's just no miracle fix against lidar - except not to speed. |

Re: Best Radar and Laser detector
I disagree as it has saved me countless times. You don't have much time to react (split second) but if train your ears to hit the brakes when the laser warning goes off it will save you.
You guys saying these things are trash are nuts. I've saved myself 4 or 5 thousand in fines by using a V1. In that time I have received 2 tickets and I got both dismissed. On one occasion the laser went off but I didn't do anything about it because it always goes off in the same square mile and that is due to Nortel being there. They must do some kind of laser testing because it will trigger the laser band on the V1. The building sits next to the freeway. Anyway, a cop decided to hide over there and use laser. I just figured it was Nortel as usual. The other ticket came on my 929. I was commuting and something got in my eye underneath the helmet. One eye was watering like crazy and it was starting to affect my vision. I hit the gas to get off at the next exit because I didn't want to wreck. I saw the led flash in my helmet (H.A.R.D. unit) but I was trying to get off the highway and get stopped as quickly as possible. I explained this to the officer and luckily I had left my insurance card at home so he wrote me a ticket for that instead of speeding, and I had that one dismissed the next day with a quick trip to the copper station. The damn thing works. I even take it in the rental car. Don't drive without it

Re: Best Radar and Laser detector
Bel X65 (Escort 8500 same thing) here, I bought it last spring when I got the ZX, just because.
I went to court a few years ago for a LIDAR ticket that I was not guilty of (long story) and although I beat it (no show cop) if I had known what was going on I would have been alot more aware of my location and speed then I was. I prefer the term 'influence reminder' then radar detector, because although I don't speed in my vehicles anyways, all it takes is one guy with a bad mood about +5 over and my insurance soars for the next 7 years. My X65 was less then 1 years worth of surcharges . I got it from radarbusters (aka radar roy) and have been VERY pleased with it. |

I've had a Valentine for years, and it has saved my ass countless times. It will only save you from laser if the cop is shooting another car near you. The amount of infrared(?) scatter is enough to pick up on the V1. I just got back from driving 400 miles today*, and my V1 gave me plenty of warnings...and in time. ![]() *That's 400 miles in 5 hours (with one fast pit stop)...but who's counting.

Re: Best Radar and Laser detector
Alright, I'll chime in. I don't know how you can set the Valentine up on a bike to work properly. (At least not my bike).
BUT - it is a GREAT product. I very highly recommend the V1.

Re: Best Radar and Laser detector
I had one set up on my bike when I was riding on the street. I bolted the windshield mount directly to the windscreen and hardwired it to the battery.

Re: Best Radar and Laser detector
What about the back side? You just said f-it? The laser detector sets off if you put anything in front of it because it is light sensitive. Hmmm?

Re: Best Radar and Laser detector
Rear laser detection was a crapshoot, but the front protection worked great, even through a tinted screen.
