Camera Questions
I would like to get my wife a new camera for her birthday. Need some advice.
She has gone through a multi level photography class put on by a local photo shop. She really enjoys taking pics and is pretty good for a novice. The camera she used for her classes was a Canon EOS Rebel SLR. She is using a Kodak EasyShare Z740 now and it is time to move to a more flexible system. I would like to get her a decent quality all around digital SLR. We have several lenses and filters that were used on the Canon, as I understand it they will work on a dig SLR, right? Any advice about which cameras are the best price/performance, and ease of use, and what accessories are important would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Camera Questions
I've found this site to be helpful when getting the basic lay of the land in terms of functions and comparisons.
Steve's Digicams - Main Menu Beyond that, I can say that one of my oldest friends is a pro photographer and uses Canons. He gave me an older 10D to screw around with (backup to a backup to a backup for him) and it's a fantastic piece of technology. The newer ones are far more powerful. NH and others can give you a more informed hands on review.

Re: Camera Questions
Well you're already talking Canon, so my work here is done, I'll let NH take care of the rest
Though I tool prefer Steve's review's, there is this site as well that is decent: Digital Camera Reviews and News: Digital Photography Review: Forums, Glossary, FAQ |

Re: Camera Questions
Looks like I'm going to have to add to my posting in The Oracle section.
![]() Go with a Canon. If you already have some lenses and gear to go with Canon it certainly makes more sense financially to stick with them. Canon DSLR's are going to run you anywhere from roughly $600 to $8000. I suggest you start somewhere down near the lower end for hobbyist type shooting.

Re: Camera Questions
I got a first gen Rebel and suck. If you want to see what untalented can do with one check my FBo gallery as most are from it (except the ones from Grattan). It has been a good camera.

! Nice post there! Still over my head though! What do you recommend for a simple, portable tripod or stick or whatever would work best? Thanks to all for the info!

Re: Camera Questions
We looked at several Canon SLR's today. She seems to like the Rebel EOS XTI. We found it at Comp USA for $650 with out memory card. This is around what I was planning to spend.
I don't mind spending more if it gets her something she can utilize. Is there a model with more features that would benefit her as a relative newcomer? I'm open to looking at used cameras, if that is a relatively safe thing to buy used, and could net a higher level model. What size mem card would you recommend? On the almost month long trip to New Hampshire in August she took almost 1000 pics. NH, I read your thread in the Oracle forum again. I understood much more than I thought I would! Nice job of conveying your info

Re: Camera Questions
You might be able to find a used 20D for around the same price but I'm not sure it'd be much better for a beginner. The XTi should fit the bill quite nicely.
For memory cards, go to newegg.com or buy.com and pick up a few 1 or 2 gig cards. Unless you have a laptop or a portable hard drive with you, you're going to want a lot of memory with you. 6-8 gigs should be safe for that camera. |
