On bike cam

I am attempting to replace my hard drive recorder for recording my rides. I wanted something in a MiniDV format. For people that have on bike cams what type of recorder do you use. Brand name model number and cost would be helpful. Thanks.

Sheep of blue, Evltwin and BWhip will be the ones who can help on this.

Red Rider could too but he has CRS (Can't Remember Shit) disease.

Can't help much with MiniDV, mine is an old school digital 8. The newer MiniDV cams are less than half the size of mine.

Re: On bike cam

I've got two mini-DV's at the moment. A Sony DCR-HC42, and a Canon Elura 90. The Canon is the better camera, but the Sony will allow the use of a LANC controller, which enables me to just push a remote button to enable/disable the recording function, without having to open up the pouch and access the camera.

Re: On bike cam

I didnt know the HC42 allowed AV in. I looked at what I assume would be a later version of that camcorder the HC48 and it didnt have AV inputs.

Re: On bike cam

I used a Sony TRsomething-27 (Hammer can kiss my ass ) that recorded in MiniDV format. I had it hooked up to a front and rear facing Bulletcam, controlled by a Lanc switch. Worked great...until I dropped it.

I didnt know the TR series were in MiniDV format. I dont think they make those any more. Since you dropped it what do you use now?

It uses a rather obscure AV in jack (Sony 10-Chip Multi-AV), but it does allow it.

And the Sony jack is the problem I had with my Sony. Otherwise the cam is fine but the board is loose now from stress and so the cam is junk for on bike use.

Having recently looked the choices are basically bad and worse for mini-DV (which is a shame as I don't want the proprietary stuff). Sony has a single (expensive) DV cam that also has LANC. The HD stuff has no AV in. I got the tape deck (expensive) which works good so far but is bigger, also the control via Firewire is flaky. No one but Sony does LANC anymore and finding AV in is tough. In short all your choices suck

I'm pretty sure it was the TR series (Hammer was right about the CRS... ), but it definitely was the MiniDV format. I haven't replaced any of it...

The only cam I can find now is the Sony HC96 which is a bit more than I would need, but it has the AV in and the LANC. Just last year it seemed like there were a bunch of different choices. I almost went ahead and bought the chasecam solid state recorder for $500 but the Sony is about the same and I can still use it for other stuff. The chasecam recorder will be for just the bike and nothing else. Cool piece though. I dont trust the HD stuff because I think the vibration might kill it. (RIP Archos AV420).

Most solid state cams that I have found are either heavily compressed or low res. Would love to find something that swaps CF cards like tape

By HD I meant HiDefinition. Most people that I know that tried hard drive setups had problems.

Im not sure about the chasecam peice. Its actually not a camera but a recorder, the camera is seperate. It has a lot of cool features like the G force module that you can check the amount of g's during turns and acceleration and braking. ChaseCam, Your Source for Video at Speed

From what I understand MiniDV is the highest def you can get so that is what I will be sticking with for now.

Re: On bike cam

Ok I went with an almost new Sony HC96 for $460 shipped including a MiniDV tape. I just need to get a LANC control and I am good to go. Almost forgot I need to get a new battery pack for the cam since I lost both of them.

Be sure to get a 1.6 version Lanc so it will work correctly. 1.4 will control the cam but not power up/down

Do you have an idea on where I can get one and how much it will cost?

Re: On bike cam

Hoyt Technologies: Helmet Cameras, Helmet Cams: Helmet Camera Accessories is the one I have and it works fine with my wheel control sony. Also consider the extension. It is a standard submini stereo plug but radioshack does not go that small for extensions. If you want to go from trunk to bars you will want more length than the switch has.

Re: On bike cam

Ok thanks. I got one of my cameras from Hoyt...I dont know why I didnt think of them. Did anyone happen to take a look at the chasecam peice...with the G Force module it is kind of sick.

Re: On bike cam

8 AA batteries with a connector. The one I got from Hoyt is my favorite as it has doors on it. But you can go to Radioshack and get the parts if you need.

I've run a power lead from the battery on the CBR, and keep the cam in the tankbag. When I'm using the cam on the motard (camcorder in backpack), I just use the battery pack that came with the camera (8AA), and use rechargeable batteries. If you're putting the camcorder and camera somewhere on the bike, it would make sense to just use the bike's power.

Re: On bike cam

If I go that route I would assume I would need some kind of regulator since I am not likely to get a clean 12v more like 12-15v. Does that affect your cam performance?

I haven't had any issues hooking it directly to the bike.
