Earplugs......?

I know I'm supposed to wear 'em, but I hate 'em. They either won't stay put, or get yanked out when I pull my helmet on and they just feel funny. I've also decided that I'd hate hearing loss even more. So...........am I just using the wrong kind? What does everybody else use? I've just been using the kind you roll up and jamb in your ear-hopefully before it expands again.

Re: Earplugs......?

I've just use the squish-and-plug foam types for years, never had an issue. CBRVFR has some trick custom made ones, though.

Re: Earplugs......?

There are lots of varieties that you roll in your finger and jam in your ear. Try a few to see if some work better than others. I make sure I hold it tight until it gets real thin, then push it in and hold it until it expands. If I don't do that then they tend to not go in far enough and then push themselves out when they expand. A little dampness helps them slide in a little easier (usually), and pulling up on the top of the ear tends to straighten the ear canal so they go in better.

Definitely learn to use the right and they will save your hearing.

Just use some purple foam ones I can get all over down here. Toss them after the day each day though.

Re: Earplugs......?

I bought some custom injected ones at a motorcycle show a couple of years ago. They work and have held up very well. $60, as i recall.

What kind are you using? If you're using the foamies and they're falling out easily, you're not putting them in right.

Custom injected? Do you have to use a power commander for that?

No wonder you are so fast!

Re: Earplugs......?

I tried the custom route, but I have such small ear canals that they don't work for me. I use the foam ones. Specifically, the Howard Leight Laser Lite. They're bright pink and yellow. They work really well for me. I cut about a third off the end so that they don't stick out beyond my ears and therefore don't pull out when I put my helmet on. There is a good bit hanging out of my little ears, so the trimming helps.

Re: Earplugs......?

For whatever reason, none of the various foam ones would work in my ears. I finally decided to go to a hearing specialist and have some custom ones molded. Cost around $90.00, but they are really, really good. They fit perfectly, are comfortable, and knock the sound way down. Definitely worth the investment, IMO.

To prevent the constant ringing that comes with cronic tinnitis.

Tinnitus treatment and causes on Medicinenet.com

Think of it as listening to Frenchie as if you were trapped in a truck cab on a long trip ... indefinitely

(no offense, just trying to put it into terms Hammer will listen too )

I tried similar ones (like you can get at just about any drug store and look like that ... but in simple orange or tan) but didn't like the stick poking out of my ear, that drug on thing like the helmet liner. I've heard of people cutting that stick, but that is used to install them. For less than the cost of shipping those, I'd check out the drug store

Also, unless you are just riding around town, I think you want more than 20dB. I use some rated at 28 or 30 and like that level of protection. Those still get a little loud after a few hours on the road.

Can't tell what they are from the site but I try to have at least a 25 NRR (noise reduction rating) ear plug. You can usually find some really good ones at a metal supply or welding supply shop. These are the guys that make some of the best reusable and throw away foamies. Earinc/Insta-Mold - Worldwide provider of customized earplugs for hearing protection and communication systems

I wore the Ear Classic for 10 years under my flight helmet with no fitment issues. I still can't hear voices well when there's background noise if that helps sway your opinion on NRR. I have the Soft FX's now but I'm looking into electronic active protection now.

Try Lazer Lites by Howard Leight. Ive worn ear plugs everyday for the last decade and these are the best for me by far.

Re: Earplugs......?

Used the standard foamies for years with no issues. As been stated, you must not be putting them in correctly. Have scene people just set them in the opening of the ear canal actually leaving the canal open and they would always fall out.

You are supposed to roll them up,
Place them in the ear canal
And then hold the end in place until they are done expanding.

Some of the training I HAD to attend stated something about pulling the top of the ear with the opposite hand back as to hyper-extend the ear canal. I personally never found that of use so didn't do it.

Have ridden without plugs ONCE. Can't stand that wind noise.

I have a small ear opening, and that works for me. I've been using the cheap foam ones since I started racing a long, long time ago, and they work. But if I rush, I'll get them in a little rather than all the way, then I have them kind of work. Doesn't happen very often to me.

Yeah, I don't like how they feel either. So I went to an Audiologist and had a set custom made. They are designed for musicians. They have filters on them so I am still kind of able to hear regular conversations yet they take out 25 db. This particular doctor sells them to motor cops in the area. Around $180.

Re: Earplugs......?

I can't ride without them anymore. My sense of speed gets all jacked up. I use some i bought from lowes that seem to be smaller than the average "foamy". I found the trick to getting them in properly is to roll them to compress the plug and not just squeaze them. Whenever i just sqeaze them they seem to back out of my ear after a few miles.
