Z told me about the $30 kits at dinner last night. I really thought I was looking at more money than that. I'll be upgrading sooner than I thought.

I bought a set for my wife's Ninja, but haven't installed them yet. The going recommendation is to buy the kit and head down to Radio Shack for heavier wires and nicer switch-gear.
My bud bought a more expensive set for his ST-1300, but the control head looked like a factory install when he was done. Very trick four position setting, indicated by a red light bar. Attached is the best pic I have (see lower left.) Unfortunately it was taken after the bike was totaled.
BTW...heated grips are THE BEST mod you can make to any bike.
I'm even considering a cheap set on my track bike next year for the spring/fall track days. Even in warmer temps they help keep your hands loose and the radiating warmth increases alertness IMO. I use mine on my BMW even when it's in the 60's- low 70's.

I have the Symtec model on my '98 VFR, along with a better looking three-position rocker switch. Very nice way to take the edge off on a cool day.
FYI: If you have a Throttlemeister on your bike, don't go with the Hot Grips - Marker Machine says they won't work. However, any of the variations that use the thin adhesive wraps under your existing grips will be fine with the TM.

DUX, that kinda looks like the Honda OEM heated grip controller. Is what he got?
Yeah, pretty sure that they are. Bought them from Honda and installed them himself. He gave them to me when the ST got trashed. I'm planning on putting them on the Spyder.
I think there are some close copies out there too.

I've always used spray bomb enamel. It works better than grip glue/rubber cement, but I've heard of people using aqua net as well. I didn't know they still made that stuff. Works well in the potato gun as well.

I haven't tried it with heated grips - yet. I got a set for her Brutale that are still hanging on the wall in the garage, I need to put them on before riding season.

Do you just slide your factory grips back over the top of the heating unit? I've always had a hard time getting the grips back on just the regular handlbars. How do get them over the extra thickness?

The kit on my VFR, and the one I got for her bike are integrated into the grips themselves, not a separate element that you slide your own grips over. The installation is exactly the same as installing a new set of grips.
edit: I just looked back at the elements that BJG ordered, and those should be thin enough to not cause a huge problem when installing. I'm not sure if hair spray will have any detrimental effect, but it makes the grips slick until it dries/cures.

The heating element thingy has an adhesive backing to keep it in place. I've always reused the original grips, its not "that" much of thicker. Like I said before, the hairspray allows it to slide on real smooth. The grips have never slid off or spun in place. I'm guessing you can also safety wire it if thats a concern
