"The Spot" GPS Tracker
So this might be of some interest to the GS guys out there, so I wanted to post up and see if anyone had any experience with the "Spot" GPS dealie-o.
SPOT SATELLITE MESSENGER :: HOME PAGE Basically a GPS receiver and satcom transceiver in one. Plus friends and family can log on to a web site and see the last time you checked in, and if you need help that isn't an emergency you can have it send a text message or e-mail to people. Since it doesn't rely on the cell network, it works anywhere. The roommate and I are planning a 2 week tour of most of California's national forests, and this seemed like a good investment. Anyone else have one, or know someone who does? At a couple hundred bucks, seems like a good insurance policy if something goes wrong out in the middle of nowhere.

A friend of mine and her husband have one. They live in Colorado and are always outdoors doing stuff. Like you said, for what they cost, it's real cheap insurance.

Had one for a little over a year now - SPOT Messenger
Not a bad unit for letting loved ones know where you are. Luckily, I haven't had to use the "help" or 911 features. EDIT: there is a discount if you are an AMA member

If you google enough you'll find one free probably (lots of random promo's with spot are a free unit promo with prepaid year of full service). I've not used 911 service with it thankfully, and I don't think anyone besides me has actually tracked us on it but its nice to have...bit of a piece of mind when your gps just shows you as a dot between some lakes and nothing else till you zoom out to the 50 mile scale
