Thanks BJG - Will have to buy another map. The one I've got from my 1986 visit is Western United States - probably a collectors item now - has the Exon driveway attendant (remember them?) putting a tiger in your tank on the back. Do they still sell maps over there?!(now that you all run multiple inter-planetary
guidance systems on your handlebars).

I might have sold one of those last night, funny enough.

I'm still wondering how these GPS units cope with the vibration from both the road shocks (some pretty rugged road conditions where I go) and from the engine at sustained high revs. Also how they cope with wet weather? I'm thinking that putting the GPS in a clear map pocket of a tankbag might solve these problems, at the expense of accessibility to the unit?
I'm a complete 'newbie' on this subject (having always managed by memorising maps to avoid having to stop) but would value the knowledge of those of you who have used this technology for some time.
RAM mounts are pretty simple devices, made exclusively from durable plastic and alloy...fairly impervious to vibration, and nothing to get damaged by water really...

Having used GPS devices on vehicles that are much more vibration prone and seen much harsher environments than any motorcycle can produce, you'll not have a problem. Check the device your thinking of purchasing to validate water resistance. Most devices these days are at least water resistant.
The Garmin Geko and ETrex units I bought in 2002, and took to Iraq with me, still work.

Of course I'm thinking of the GPS itself, not the mounting system...
All of the RAM mount stuff I have has a rubberized coating on it which helps with the vibrations. I haven't had my current GPS on a motorcycle but there is virtually no vibration with my windshield mount setup. From what I remember, my previous GPS had no issues with the handlebar setup I had on the motorcycle either.
OK - sorry - not trying to hijack the thread (again). I just wondered if there were general vibration issues with GPSs mounted on motorcycles. I guess where I'm thinking of going with one (the Flinders Ranges, the oldest mountain range on earth..) is more like Iraq than the average interstate. Not wishing to start a new thread on GPSs on your RAM mounts thread, but as I said, it is a technology I am yet to adopt.
I guess spending more does not necessarily guarantee a more robust unit?
See, the cool thing about another thread is, you will get better help and advice because the subject line will draw more on-topic attention. Not to mention that the information is not lost or buried somewhere where people cannot find it when they need help or advice...
You could even add tags that would help others find the information too...

I'd have new threaded it but I'm trying to resist...I tend to get excited over GPS discussions I guess you could say. It's almost like I need a whole other forum dedicated to the topic to truly expound on such things

Garmin makes ones they state are good for motorcycles. check out their website, I think of the current ones they only have 1 but you can still find older models that are good.

Zumo 550 and 660 currently exist for bikes, the 660 actually has a set of rubber tubes that install IN the mounting piece and effectively isolate it from the vibes of the RAM mount it comes with.
The Zumo 660 is the worst Garmin software product I have owned. The hardware is some of the most well thought out though...oh the irony.

Sometimes ya just gotta make your own. I got a couple of the mounts shown below with standard 1/4-20 threrads (and didn't realize until after I got them that I could have bought them with 10mm x 1.25 ) and made a mounting plate for one of the bikes, and the other one I just drilled and tapped the upper triple clamp.

Was just perusing the GPSCity/ExpressMounts site last week and noticed you could buy parts. Was going to do similar. Just buy the balls (tee hee) and make my own.

I guess I'm not exactly getting it on this set-up. Where would you put the bolt?
I'm not finding the tank mount one like WDGAH has. I'd like one of those so that I can run a powerlet through the stem. I'll be running something like a 765, 775, 785 in an aquabox.
Edit: Nevermind. That first set-up is exactly what I need for the 'tard. In other news, I was remembering my F4i for some reason, my VFR doesn't have tank bolts that would work for the tank mount like WDGAH. I think I may go with evl's plan and make my own custom set-up. That or go back to my original plan of a stem mount.

...dude you ride an offroad bike with slicks, 1/2 the weight of a GS, double the suspension, with a browning 50 cal going off 32" from your skull as a daily freaking driver - I'd expect anything except a nitro dragbike to be bland by comparison - SSG
