On a more serious note - and thread-related... I acknowledge the value of the GPS, and may end up putting one on the Cagiva for trips in the Flinders Ranges north of here - all dirt roads and not always signposted! Could any of you GPS users on this thread resolve a couple of 'urban myths' for me? 1. A friend who runs one on his Buell claimed that police could potentially download GPS history and know how fast you had gone?
    2. Rumour has it that changes in the alignment of satellites/planet will make GPSs less accurate inside five years?
As to the rude Aussie hard-man stuff - would I be right in thinking that you are not all life members of the Matt Mladin fan club, or am I missing something?!

A1: Depends on the GPS you're using and your laws. If the device isn't saving data/tracks, it can't be used. Also, there have been cases on both sides of the argument (prosecution and defense) here. Some judges allowed the data, some haven't.

A2: The rumor isn't due to orbitology or astronomy but acquisition and fielding. The acquisition/fielding process the government uses to update/upgrade takes way longer than it should. Even if nothing were done for several years, there are enough satellites to keep you on the right fireroad.

A3: Mladin's alright in my book.

    Rude? I beg your pardon...

Rude could be defined as walking into a productive thread and posting a flippant off topic blurt...

Furthermore, whinging when you are shined up for it is just poor form...

Flippant? Me? I don't know where you get off, fella! I guess I'm a different flavour of motorcycle addict. I just had a mental picture of a rider trying to glimpse the road in between a multitude of handlebar-mounted VDUs! I'm more your stripped-back-bike kinda motorcyclist (no Mr Baketech, not "shined up" - don't you go getting all excited again) - I spent so much $$ removing weight from my bikes, it pains me to put any back on. Thanks for the banter people, even if some of you have been a bit naughty...

Ask WDGAH to post a pic of his setup...it's quite a construction...

A tank bolt RAM with another stem mounted RAM..."only slightly taller, as to give it a two level effect"*...a GPS on one, and MP3 on the other...completely offensive to the hard men of the rufty tufty biker set...

    * Shrubbery optional.

Actually, it's a GPS on one (Zumo, with the built-in MP3 player) and a Delphi XM Roady XT satellite radio on the other.

    Yea, I'll post a pic.

And ... I got the latter from the same place this thread was started about: expressmounts.com - great prices and SUPER fast shipping.

My GS has a Zumo 550 and Zumo 660 'cascaded' enough that it cost us time at the border to discuss why a Human would want 2 gps's...

I am just glad he didn't realize there were 4 there.
i scored most of my RAM stuff by searching 'ram mount lot' on fleabay...and a couple times I hit the goldmine...even if it did mean buying a couple of cup holders

Always interested in good RAM mount setup photos

Actually, it's ended up being a 765T. woohoo. After running into two unpublished road closures on the BRP yesterday, I'm thinking maybe traffic info might be worth having after all.

Why is the 765 so much better than than the 855? bluetooth and traffic?

I didn't jump on the Amazon deal Friday - it would've cut into the emergency fund I was saving for the aforementioned BRP trip.

Honestly, after riding through at least six different rainstorms on the way home yesterday, I'm wondering if I want to even bother with anything but a waterproof unit, ziplock bags or no.

The 855 is a funky case designed version of a 265w with voice recognition, IMO.

Only prob if you jumped on the 855 deal is it wouldn't have shipped for 4-6 weeks, yike!

I've never used a GPS on a bike that wasn't waterproof. I have used my radar detector 'in a bag' but that isn't something I really need to see, just hear. I'll likely be looking into getting my 765 waterproofed. There is a company in this state that my company uses to waterproof non-waterproof phones, it uses some type of immersive coating and directly coats the electronics. Once I find out more I'll share. Should have the 765 later this week and will probably go with a RAM Aquabox 2 in the interim.

4-6 weeks can't be too bad. It only gets one yike!

Oh dear oh dear! I am aware of Chuck (not really a fan...) but I'm worried about the "ring" reference! And the Ram Mounts - surprised Sheep of Blue didn't add a comment there. All good fun! Just noticed your Elba palindrome Baketech - is the 'Shrubbery Optional' a reference to Monty Python's Holy Grail? (Definitely a fan there). Thanks for the laughs - better let the thread get back to the ram mountings!:

    No worries Pat...

I think what you are seeing here is that motorcycling has a lot of facets, and people enjoy biking for many varied reasons. But because we are all different, no one really gives a rat's ass if you don't like (or understand) the particular niche that gives them pleasure...

What you will find they do have an unlimited interest in, is you....and by that I mean, what you like about biking, when, where and how you enjoy it...

Alternately, you'll probably find that people here have an unlimited capacity to take the piss out of you should for some reason you choose to dump on the particular twist or biking that they enjoy...

So just like riding it's an interesting fork in the road... You can choose to contribute by sharing something of interest, or you can lob stones at what others enjoy, and be punched up for it...

Both can be entertaining in their own way of course, but I assure you, we have more interest in what bit of motorcycling stirs your soul...

Thanks Baketech and Co. for the welcome and the fun. I honestly wasn't lobbing stones, and if you ride a motorcycle, in any form or context, that's OK with me! I guess what doesn't always come across in this medium is the subtle inflection, which may be more obvious in the face-to-face exchange I am more accustomed to! Nevertheless I have enjoyed the banter immensely; yes, even the Aussie Hard Man stuff. I have visited your country, and will be there in a few months - albeit Fort Lauderdale - where a Ducati friend of mine (from Adelaide) has been encouraging us to visit. I travelled up and down the western states years ago, and loved it (my wife has been all around the States slightly earlier) so we are looking forward to Nov. This is probably not the venue to go through my extensive motorcycling history, but I am happy to share that with any of you who are interested. Is there an appropriate place for such indulgence?

Thanks for the reference ND4SPD. Unfortunately we will be travelling on 4 wheels in Nov., although I hope to get on the track (Jennings?) at the generosity of my friend in Lauderdale, who has a few Ducatis. I have done a lot of touring over here, much of it on my '78 900SS (did 169,000 kms on that one) - since sold; saw its current owner on it today, still loving it. Made me feel a bit nostalgic, 'til I watched him putting it on the centrestand and kickstarting it! Still starts first kick, but I am a bit older now - I used to think electric starters were for pretend motorcyclists, but I love mine now. Of course, on the 1098 I don't even have to hold it in! How woosey is that?!

Since this thread is already jacked...post up when you'll be at Jennings. Maybe we can a few others that are in earshot of the place and have a mini outing.

At this point, no mixer. Both the MP3 player (Zumo) and the Delphi Roady XT (XM radio receiver) pump enough juice to hear fine using my ear canal buds.

I've dropped well over $1K in the past few weeks prepping this new to me/second '98 VFR (to get it set up exactly like my previous '98 was), so I need to wait a little while before picking up the Autocomm.

Is the Delphi water resistant? I've been looking for an XM option.
