Beltronics RX65 , to know what love/hate means.

I got my RX65 in 2006 after www.radarbusters.com had proclaimed it as one of the best MC oriented GPS's out there. This is mostly due to the quality of the device, rugged internals, and adaptability of the unit I gathered.

In early 2007 (like January) I noticed the unit starting to give me obscure Ka reports, like it would enter POP mode as there was a legitimate threat and then go away, or fall down to the lower alert levels and remain there. Then it would sometimes start alerting for Ka and then flip to X, laser, Ka, etc...all at the 2-4 level of alert (it goes 0-10 for those unfamiliar).

I called and got it fixed under warranty, they sent it back alledgedly adjusting or replacing some array. Who knows what they did, it seemed to work ok - cool.

Mid ~2008 - The unit sitting on the dash of my truck driving to work in the sun tells me I get hit with Laser. Then decides it's Ka, X, Ka...you get the picture here. It is of course now out of warranty, and they want me to pay for it, its like 45$ but they will upgrade it or some other crap...I don't really care. I just ask them to actually FIX the unit.

Unit comes back to me with a new power cord (hey thanks, it's nice to get at least a little extra since you made me pay for something that IMO you never really fixed) but I wasn't too upset - as long as it worked.

Well I used it on the bike and in the truck again for awhile, and life was good until 2 weeks ago. Going over the Tappanzee bridge it goes into POP mode and starts freaking out Ka, X, laser, Ka, damn near every technology in the world is hitting me at that exact moment. I wrote it off thinking hey maybe that whole terrorist watch list thing means they follow me closer than even I know...I mean I was on a bridge?
Nope, next day same thing, middle of a field in Pa. and it goes apesh-t on me.

Call Bel today and they looked at my prior history with the unit. For one thing I was sort of pleased when they looked me up by my model and zip code. Yes, I gave them those two things and they knew who I was, so at least someone else from my city hasn't had the same issues .

They kept me on hold for awhile and the guy came back on and said they were treating this as a warranty repair and it is no charge since this doesen't seem to be getting any better. He also said that because they cannot actually give me a brand new unit as replacement, he will request that service replace the mainboard and subsequent internals. I assume this means "anything but the case" but we shall see.

This would have been a rant this morning, but all in all - despite the fact this is the THIRD freaking time I am doing this, I'm (so far) ok with the fact that they are at least giving me the good lip service and telling me good things.

Im a bit upset at the fact that there was no discussion of kicking the 45$ back to me for the interim fix, but if they truly really do fix it this time I'm willing to write it off. I'll send it out Monday and keep you gypsy's in the know.

Thanks for bearing with me in this solemn and troubled time.

p.s. When it works, it is the best RD I have ever used, otherwise I would posted a video of it getting runover by now I think. It does redeem itself

Nice to hear customer service still exists. I had a Bel 870(~$90 unit I bought from Radio Shack back in like '97-98) that served me well for several years. I was rather surprised.

I've owned several V1's going to back their first release. I've sent two back over the years for updating, but eventually traded in my last unit for their latest model.

I have the passport 9500ix.

I've actually getting ready to update it. I have to download an update tool, and the newest package and then tote the laptop out to the car with a USB cable, but this will give me all radar camera's and a warning at speed traps.

I love the ability to block out false alarms with the GPS.

Traded in - to V1?

I'll have to read their site...didn't realize they offered such a thing.

No, they made a significant redesign to the unit several years ago, and offered a discount on the new model if you traded in the old one.

With the 9500ix being upgradeable via USB I don't think I'll ever buy another unit.

Until they have a turn by turn GPS with Radar built in.. honestly why haven't they done this yet?
