Garmin Zumo 660

So maybe I am GPS-obsessed? who knew?

All I know is I have a Zumo 550 on my bike now that was lacking quite a bit. On the 660 there are alot of differences, so I figure why not say happy birthday to me, and see what the differences are?

For now all I have are some Zumo 660 photos which I'll attach. I will take out the bike and car mounts later and review these and post some action shots. I can say that the MC mounting hardware is all by RAM again which is cool. The new mount is very thin and low profile...it's interesting at best...not sure how it will be compared to the 550's, but as stated the wiring is definitely way more heavy duty this time. As the MC mount appears to be hardwired to the 'dock' portion of the MC mount. This could make wiring very interesting.

The unit has some heft to it, it's definitely heavier than other Nuvi units, but not as hefty as the Zumo 550.

So far all I've done is take it out of the box as I am actually at work at the moment so I got things to do. I will post up more later, and I also have a thread I started here for it's unboxing and followups:

That said...on with the photos!

Keep posting I don't think I care about the 3D view but the ability to use the storage card better would be nice. Is it the same chip as the 550?

I haven't checked the technical side yet...but I don't think it is. There is a deeper BT chipset and alot more visual enhancements in the UI + better shading, which I know the 550 would have choked on.

Unlike the 550 Zumo, this doesen't look like a Nuvi x60 wrapped in a thick case with some prongs at the bottom, it actually has some of the same features as the higher end GPS units now (ie: lane assist, msn direct optional, etc.).

Just realized the motorcycle mount is VERY well sorted for an autocom or similar integrational device . They no longer think of the "mount" as being a communications hub. They have an umbilical cord that contains all the leads (everything) that runs up to the unit. The unit has no physical plugs on the dock/mount at all now.

It's nice because now I tie in power, and plug it into the autocom right under my seat without playing games

Even the bag is different...much more suited for bouncing around a tankbag, and a useable zipper pull that you can use with gloves on.

This is definitely alot more of the zumo I wanted to see all along.

I must have mentioned it does A2DP right? ok just checking...

I use the 3D view on my shoestring-budget nuvi 750 set up and have actually grown to prefer it. It takes some getting used to but I now like it better than the standard top-down view.

Truth of the matter is you can really only use 3D properly with a large, widescreen unit. Gotta be enough you can zoom out but still see details. Thats why the original Zumo sucks for it. The square screen and zero data maneuverability = suck.

I use 3D and 2D, but with the laneview and 3D buildings now...it will mostly be 3D on the 660.
