Inverter for my tire warmers

I purchased an inverter (converter) for my SUV so I could plug my tire warmers. I got the 750 watts... Is that enough watts?

Is that 750 watts at 12 volts DC or 750 watts at 120 volts AC? That's 62.5 amperes at 12 volts and would flatten your battery in a matter of minutes . . .

That is 750 watts at 120..... it has to be.....

Every inverter I have ever seen has given the wattage in AC.... hopefully her's is the same?

6.25 Amps at 120....., is that enough for tire warmers?

If they are chicken hawks they draw 1150 per pair. You would trip that thing right away, you could run one tire warmer at a time.

And Do not Think of Running two of those inverters. Trust me from a guy who had to learn the hard way

ummmm that still pulls 62.5 amps of 12 volt power from the battery. I wouldn't use it for tire warmers without running the engine, and since you really need to run the warmers for an hour or so, that doesn't sound like a great solution for running warmers. In the long run, I would bet a decent generator would be a much better (and less expensive) choice, especially as opposed to running a 305 HP V8 for several hours as a "generator".

Re: Inverter for my tire warmers

For me the 62.5 amps does not concern me for the draw if she is willing to run her car the whole time.....

I understand that at the posts, 62.5 amps is being pulled, the bigger issue is that the supplied power is only 6.2 amps. at 120 volts.

No way would I run my car for that long....... at almost 300 dollars for a good inverter a small generator is the better way to go.

What part about agreeing with me don't you understand?

I wouldn't use anything less than 1500 watts personally, but I see people run them with 1 to 1.2K all the time. There is just a large voltage drop if you don't have enough available current. My point about the 62.5 amps at 12 volts addressed the fact that 1 hour of a steady pull at that current would eat just about any car battery for lunch unless it was being charged by running the car.

So now I have nothing to warm my tires this coming weekend. I better start checking around and see what I can find. This addiction is breaking my bank account

Are you racing this weekend? If not, you really don't need tire warmers . . .

Re: Inverter for my tire warmers

OK I think you are understanding this is a bad idea but to add to what Abtech said. To power the inverter at that load you are drawing a CONTINOUS 62.5 amps. Now I am guessing that the alternator on your car is rated between 80-120AMP and that is to run the vehicle also. So you are sitting there running the alternator at full load while likely discharging the battery some also. This is a great way to cook an alternator and battery.

Consider a Honda 2000i when you can FrenchieR6 I like mine a lot.

Ooops and one other thing. A car lighter socket will not deliver 62.5 amps without a fire eventually (should blow a fuse LONG before that)

Re: Inverter for my tire warmers

I agree with someone here.

If you get an inverter to handle that much draw, you can get a KIPOR generator for that price. Plus with that size of an inverter you have to put big wires in the vehicle to carry the load if not you have a car fire.

Damn, what would you do without me?

Do you have one of those generators Hammer? I am looking for one in the 2000+ watt range (the 1000 cuts it too close for most tire warmer sets I've seen). I was thinking about one of the small coleman powermates but I have no idea regarding quality. Any input would be appreciated.

(sorry for semi-thread hijack, but it looks like we are talking about powering our tire warmers so I figured I may as well jump in).

I do not have one myself but alot of guys on the WERA board really like them. They have said they are a tad but louder than the Honda but not $600 louder. Maybe a few DBs but not many more. I have not heard of any bad comments as well. I seen they do have a 1 year warranty through the MFG. The Coleman's are better than the B&G gens but they are still a bit loud compared to the hondas. I have sent Stickboy a PM and seeing if he will be by here anytime soon as I am getting one as well.

Well, thanks. I need to find a generator before my next day out which is May 19th.

It says on his site that he will ship, I believe for $100. Even at that it is still a good price.
