265$ isn't a bad deal though for any Garmin 27xx series, the 2730 is discontinued as is the 2720 now...only the 2820 remains. The 29xx is going to be sick, and 1k$...so get em while they're hot.

Actually, my speculation is that the new garmin will be a Nuvi blah blah , cause they seem to be drifting away from GPS's that geeks like and making shit that the average antitechnical salesperson could use (present company excluded ).
ZING!!!!

This units whole existence was based on the XM feature, and with that antenna missing in its bundle it is really now just a 2720. Still, short money for that unit. They have the 2610 for the same price.

Re: Garmin Streetpilot 2720

Is the XM feature in the 2730 really usable and worthwhile, or would it be more practical to use a seperate reciever?

Does the antenna need to be a garmin unit?

Re: Garmin Streetpilot 2720

just bought a factory refurbed 2720 on ebay. probably be here next week. $305 shipped. should come in handy at work when I do routes I don't really know. plus it'll be cool to have on the bike because I plan on doing some longer rides this year to areas I'm not so familiar with.

For some reason (due to the specifications of the units at release mostly - which unfortunately I cannot recall) I thought the 2730 was a weaker version of the 2720 but with the 'pluses' of the enhanced functionality.

I'd have to research it a bit...but there was a reason I was anti-2730 and it wasn't just cause I had to buy XM. i thought.

You are 100% correct, it is a good price for any Garmin automotive navigation system - and if you can get it with a factory warranty go for it .

The 2610 is a cool unit - the 2720 is a little faster/smoother and offers a few more config options. The bigger deal about it is no external memory and all NT8 maps preloaded and NT8 DVD and unlock code. The 2610 had an internal CF card that yes while they are cheap as heck - it's still a hassle to laod/unload maps and stuff.
But IMHO the 2720 would still make the best bike unit in that series because of the sunlight-readable screen. The 2610 did annoy me in that regard, easy to get lost in the sun sometimes.

(I did own a 2610 and 2720 at the same time for about 3 months last year, I don't just sit around thinking of GPS specs all day anyways.)

well thank you for confirming that my choice in the 2720 was a good one. now I just need to find a mount for the bike. I'm not sure I have the room on the handlebars for the RAM mount. I remember seeing a mount that attaches in the steering stem hole, gotta find that again to take a look at. any suggestions on mounts?

My FJR came with a touatech mount that mounts to a hole in the steering stem nut. I will take some pics of it and post them later. You can find some info on them here: CycoActive.com Motorcycle, Bicycle and GPS Accessories - and Touratech-USA, too!

those look really nice but kinda pricey. for $35 I could probably figure out how to mount the RAM mount on the handlebars.

Go with a RAM mount.

R-A-M Mount System

RAM-HB2 is how I had it mounted on my 600RR

might go with the HB1 because I don't need a second ball. but I don't have much room on the handlebars. I could slide the brake m/c over but I'm still not sure if thats enough room (and I'd have to go out and look to see what kind of space I have on the left side)

Go with the 2 - there is a good chance you might need it to clear your fairing.

Maybe I'm missing it, but what room do you need on the bar? That kit bolts on in place of the existing 1/2 round that hold the MC onto the bike, so no need for additional room on the bar. Or am I misunderstanding the question ... or part? I'm considering one of those for my bike, so I'd like to know for sure.

Re: Garmin Streetpilot 2720

You are correct, it either replaces or goes over the top of the existing 1/2 of the MC mount. I can't remember exactly, it's been a while.

so you used the front ball rather than the top ball? can you just unscrew the top ball and move it to the front part

you are correct, I was mistaken. I was just looking at them figuring out what I wanted and it dawned on me after looking at the pictures, "hey that replaces the rear part of m/c bracket."

Re: Garmin Streetpilot 2720

Hmm...I had the HB2 on my ZX-10 and it worked ok for my 60csx but gave me issues with the 2720. I'd recommend a RAM-9M or RAM-11m , then put it through a 'spare' bolt or something more centrific to the 'cockpit' area.

Your results may vary...the HB2 also went over the rear clamp on my clutch lever.

Re: Garmin Streetpilot 2720

from GPS City - Garmin GPS, Magellan GPS, Lowrance GPS & RAM Mount Factory Authorized Dealer I ordered the cradle/mounting plate/3"arm/suction cup mount kit and added in the HB1 and motorcycle wiring. if its all in stock I should get it in a couple days (the kit said they expect it Mar 17 or something, I think thats gotta be wrong)

You are not understanding the space time continuem that you are entering into with this type of unit.

I am not sure he is ready, remember the havoc I wrecked upon the universe when I first used my SP 2730!

Oh wait that's still in the future, for now!

so you're telling me a mount for an old discontinued product isn't gonna be available until next year?

but whenever they have it all I'll get it 2 days from when they hand it over to UPS. I paid the extra $5 for 2 day air.

and its spelled continuum.

Re: Garmin Streetpilot 2720

got the RAM mounts today. first problem was one of the nuts wouldn't thread onto the screw for the cradle. that was a little bit of a bitch but had another nut sitting right here that just happened to be the right size/pitch. so on to mounting it on the bike. the handlebar/clutch mount needed shorter bolts and 2 more spacers, and the spacers it came with still had to be cut down just make the bolts fit (the can't go all the way through and I didn't want short ones that just grabs a few threads). ran the wire and all done. just had to position it. sits a little low, actually below my field of vision but thats alright. clears the fairing and steering damper.

if I had gotten the HB2 the front ball would have to be removed because at full lock it would probably hit the steering damper piston. and if I had gotten a steering stem mount it probably wouldn't have cleared the damper body.

only took it out for a short ride so far. pretty nice.

You sure you installed it correctly? The stock clamp STAYS on, then the spacers go against that, then the RAM bracket goes against the spacers. Doing it that way, the bolts should be the perfect length.
