Datalogger with 10Hz GPS

I know that some of you guys have, or are looking at dataloggers with GPS. I had a chance to take a look at the DL1 last weekend at Putnam, and have to say that I walked away very impressed.

When I first looked at the traces on the laptop, I thought perhaps I was looking at a basemap of the track with a data overlay....but then was surprised to learn that they looked so good due to the GPS being 10Hz...

The basic unit is ready to go right out of the box, integrated GPS and 2-axis accelerometers. From there you can add 8 analog inputs of your choice, wheel speed sensors etc. Full details here:

Fast Tech - DL1 Details

The coolest thing though is the software. The ability to overlay the data in just about any configuration you desire is absolutely amazing. I got to see a first hand example of 3 different drivers overlaid to find minute differences in technique (gear selection & braking) that resulted in speed improvements the very next session.

Modern electrickery at it's finest...definitely worth a look if you are considering a datalogger...

Edit:
Not sure what you do with the lateral accelerometer data on a bike, but I think it can be set to act as a lean angle "reference"....ymmv, best to speak with the folks at Fast Tech about that.

Very cool Baketech. 10Hz GPS is REAL rare I wonder what chipset is used... Interesting concept almost sheeplike....

The 10Hz factor makes this thing very appealing...especially considering the low cost.

If for some reason you needed 20hz, they have a high end unit with that capability as well...

If all you wanted is 5Hz Garmin makes an OEM unit that you could log for a decent price (what I am using in my proof of concept build)

My bet is they are also using the accelerometers to interpolate points

I *believe* their 1st gen unit used that 5hz setup...and yes, I think they do smoothing with the accelerometers. Think there is some verbage on the webpage that gives more detail.

How does the frequency range affect how gps works? (just curious)

More position samples, so a smoother curve. Check my thread and you can see the separation of sample points at 1Hz vs 5 Hz. Further if you do not just interpolate the points but factor in acceleration from the accelerometers you can further shape the curve in a more accurate manner (potentially).

Yes, depending on the data output you can integrate/differentiate for a lean angle reference, and/or use actual accelerations to show how fast you are turning (countersteering? ) the bike.

The lateral accelerometer also can quantitatively show someone the difference between headshake and a tankslapper.

I know it is necessary for track mapping on the old set-up I have.

EDIT: It's also by far the most fickle sensor I've used. I've had two die.

If you want some additional post-processing done on data sometimes, I can run some thematics for you in Mapinfo if you don't have it yourself...

I have an older non-GPS AIM set-up.
