    Tomtom GO 720?

I need a new GPS... Any thoughts on the 720?

Reviews seem to be favorable and I can grab a refurbed one for $299 online at buy.com...

I bought one for kwhip for Christmas last year. I'm incredibly impressed with it. Very easy to use, intuitive, compact but easy to read. I wish I'd have bought one sooner!

Cool. My Garmin has served me well but just started having issues. Parts of the touch screen don't work any more and it's getting real picky when trying to enter an address into the search.

Buy.com. They have refurbed units for $299 but if you sign up for their credit card they'll take $50 off your first order...you get approved right away...and can use it immediately so I figured why not. I have no intention of keeping the card. I'll pay off the balance as soon as I get the statement and then cancel it.

Dang that's tempting. I've been keeping my eye out for something that I can use in the car and for backpacking. I'm open for recommendations if anybody cares to comment.

I don't know how well the Tomtom stuff will do for backpacking. They're mostly meant for the roads more traveled, so to speak.

I have a Magellan CrossoverGPS which works for Vehicle Nav, Outdoor and Marine. Marine database is sold separately. It costs 49.99 I believe. GPS comes loaded with both Vehicle and Outdoor charts.
It works well and it's small enough to carry without noticing it.

The rental car I drove in Germany had a Garmin nuvi in it and I loved it. I don't know for sure what model it was but it was a 7 series. It was the first GPS I had ever used in my life and it only took about 3 min with it before I felt like I had everything mostly figured out. After using it I'll be buying something soon. My wife really fell in love with it.

I really like my Garmin 2610 but it's decision to retire without my permission left me needing something else. I've sold both Garmin and Tomtoms in the past and both seem to be very good units. Only reason I'm switching is price. I don't think I could beat the $250 price anywhere. I mean I paid more than that for my Garmin many moons ago and this thing should kick the 2610's ass.

did anything occur to the Garmin that might have caused this departure? I've never heard of that with any of their stuff, sorry to hear it mang

Good luck with the TT, Depending on the routing features, etc. you used on the 2610 you'll love or hate the TT.

I will actually be interested in your input on the TT, after coming off of a 2610

Nope. Nothing happened to the 2610 it just started getting progressively worse over the last 8 or 9 months or so. The whole right side of the screen and bits of the lower edge just simply don't work anymore....very irritating as the "ok" button is in that area.

Weird indeed. Did you bug Garmin support at all? (just wondering).

I've heard about this occuring to one other person, but his detail about it doesen't include the GPS type:
    Problems using touchscreen.

TomTom only has roads on it. They've actually gotten better at updating faster over the years.

You can submit roads for updates via the website and if you have a dedicated TT model (not a PDA running TT software), the TT Home interface spits out updates fairly often.

TT has done a pretty good job of encouraging user interaction through the website although a majority of the inputs come from Europe from what I've seen.

Overall, TT is getting better stateside and they have excellent customer service with customer service workers who actually live and work in the US. There's something to be said for that these days.

No on the customer support thing. The 2610 is how old? Wouldn't have been worth the phone call.

As to the other....You forgot your meds again, didn't you?

Do I ever remember my meds?

Yeah, I hear ya and that makes sense. So what becomes of it now? You could use it on a bike with a stylus maybe?

I'm going to put some new batteries in the remote and see if that works. If it does, I'll probably keep it as a back-up dust collector. If not...

My brother used a TomTom for two weeks to drive from Germany, through Switzerland, France, to Italy and back. He loved it and is still raving about it. I'm going to have to find out which model.

Just got it from the friendly UPS truck. On its first maiden voyage of about 25 miles, it worked perfectly. Definitely not as techie as the Garmin units but it is very easy to use, has a nice screen on it and has plenty of volume.
For $250 I really don't think it can be beat.

Try setting a route and then making a wrong turn. I'd like to know how quickly it realizes that you are off the route and how quickly it recalculates a new route. That was one thing that I really liked about the Garmin that I used in Germany. It knew within about 8 feet of me leaving the road that I had exited the freeway. Also every time I made a wrong turn in downtown Dusseldorf it was very quick at recalculating rather than just trying to tell me to turn around.

Instantly. I was really impressed by that feature. It said "turn around as soon as possible, then turn right..."

Where the hell did you find that smilie?

Log onto the TomTom site or use the TomTom Home to download some of the other free voices.

I've got Navigator6 on my pdaphone now and have the Western European maps for my frequent trips to Germany. Been through all the updates in the US since 05 and had TomTom while I was stationed in Germany since 03. It works great in the US but it's infinitely more "in tune" with Europe. It will even show you the speed limits on the road you're on there and your travelling speed will flash red when you're speeding. On my last trip, it even had the reduced speed limit of a construction area where they were repairing a bridge overpass. Doesn't do that in the US yet but based on the updates I've seen over the last year alone, it's taking over.

Slick, mine will start recalculating within the first hundred feet of making a wrong turn and has an updated route within about 30 seconds.

Plus, I now have a RAM mount on the VFR with an Aquabox waterproof holder with touch through screen (can operate the touchscreen without opening the holder). Works awesome on the bike, just need to get to work on the electrical connections.
