Powder Coating Advice Needed

Hey folks - I'd like get my '03 Duc Marchesini's powder coated black, believe they'll look sharp with the yellow bodywork.

I've asked for quotes from two powder coating places, and got two contradictory responses: 1) No problem, bring 'em over and we'll do it, 2) big problem, you need to *very carefully* blast the existing factory coating off before powder coating.

Anyone have any experience in this area? I'm really leery of having someone blast away at the factory grey - Magnesium is pretty soft stuff, and I'm afraid I'd end up with damaged wheels.

PM member Davef - he does powdercoating for motorcycle parts. He's in Ohio, I think.

And welcome!

Both folks are right, but one wants to actually do business.

I can't speak for davef but I have seen several examples of his work.

I PM'd Shenders. As Seamus says, both are correct but it is tough, and not only due to the blasting. A lot of people in the industry are wary of magnesium for incindiary reasons.

It's not bad, just throw some water on it to cool it off.

Well, the problem solved itself, mostly. I yanked the wheels off last weekend and they were WAY too heavy to be mag - Looks like Ducati was on a cost-saving binge when they spec'd these puppies. Took 'em to the local chopper-builder to get blasted and coated.

Now if curing oven doesn't turn the cush-drive rubbers to goo I'll be all set.

Uh...you definitely want to remove anything that is not metal. The coating shop will do it if you don't.

Unfortunately, no. The cush drive bushing are pressed in to the wheel, and I didn't have the tools to remove them. The guy at the shop said he'd 'try'. I'm hoping he succeeded.

+1. Unless the bike shop you took it to had the tools, you'll either get the rims back uncoated or you'll get them back with shredded rubber parts.

Either way, you'll at least need the tool.
